having fun shooting again!
« on: August 14, 2011, 11:26:00 PM »
I picked up a recurve and starting shooting instinctive for the first time in almost 30 yrs last week and couldn't help but take it to a 3D shoot this weekend. I took my recurve and my compound just in case i chickened out once i got there but i was shooting with my 9 and 11 yr old so i thought i would let them beat me for once so i used the stick and string. The pressure of not averaging a 10 throught the course with my compound took the pressure of myself and i absolutely had a blast with the recurve even though i only averaged a 5 and lost 1 arrow in the creek (i thought it was a victory for my first time as half the targets were turkey and coon sized 3D's shooting down hills). I will obviously increase my expectations to 8+ ave (kill shots) but for now i see why more guys are shooting trad equipment at these 3D shoots, what a good time, and i meet some great guys doing the same! I definately need to figure out how not to pinch the arrow knock however as i found a few times that i would draw the bow and torque the arrow right off the shelf, most of my misses were to the right and i assume for that reason. Do most guys shoot 3 fingers under when using a glove? I get that part figured out and a 8 ave should be obtainable with some more practice!

No, most do not shoot three fingers under. You can eliminate the pinching the arrow off the string by slightly cupping your string hand as you grip the string in a deep hook and as you begin to draw the back of the hand will straighten causing the fingers to rotate the string to the right keeping the arrow on the shelf. Takes a little practice but it will work.
