I picked up a recurve and starting shooting instinctive for the first time in almost 30 yrs last week and couldn't help but take it to a 3D shoot this weekend. I took my recurve and my compound just in case i chickened out once i got there but i was shooting with my 9 and 11 yr old so i thought i would let them beat me for once so i used the stick and string. The pressure of not averaging a 10 throught the course with my compound took the pressure of myself and i absolutely had a blast with the recurve even though i only averaged a 5 and lost 1 arrow in the creek (i thought it was a victory for my first time as half the targets were turkey and coon sized 3D's shooting down hills). I will obviously increase my expectations to 8+ ave (kill shots) but for now i see why more guys are shooting trad equipment at these 3D shoots, what a good time, and i meet some great guys doing the same! I definately need to figure out how not to pinch the arrow knock however as i found a few times that i would draw the bow and torque the arrow right off the shelf, most of my misses were to the right and i assume for that reason. Do most guys shoot 3 fingers under when using a glove? I get that part figured out and a 8 ave should be obtainable with some more practice!
