Chafing my bottom lip
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:47:00 PM »
I've been shooting trad bows for the past four years off and on but I bought a new bow in July and I've been practicing a lot.  In an effort to release from a solid anchor, I wearing out my bottom lip.  I shoot two fingers under, one over and draw to the corner of my mouth.   Upon release, the string stings my bottom lip, chafing it to the point of bleeding by the time I shoot for 20 minutes.   I've been chalking it up to a naturally big bottom lip (a genetic gift from dad and mom I guess), but I've started wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
The string does not hit my nose.  And I'm shooting pretty good groups... it's just a bit painful.
Any ideas?

Suggest you look to your tab or glove.  If the tab is too long it may be "whipping" you on the lip.  Same with a glove or finger stall, the ends of the finger tip protectors may be the culprit.  If you are using a relatively standard hook of a finger in the corner of your mouth (eye tooth, etc.) the string should be leaving in a line away (out) from your lip and not hitting it on the way past.  Can you post a picture or two of your hand at full draw?

Thanks for the quick feedback.  Here are pics of me at anchor, just after release and at full draw (further back).  I realized while taking these pics that the string does sometimes clip my nose.

I don't see anything that immediately catches my attention.  Here is an idea to try.  In the third picture, you look to be in pretty good alignment but I wonder if you are "laying" your head over onto the string?  If you are starting your draw with your head more up and looking at the target, then when getting to full draw you lay your head over, like you were "cuddling" up on a rifle stock, your head will naturally turn slightly to the right.  This could be placing your lip and nose in the "line of fire."  Try this,  keep your head position as it is at the start of the draw and bring the string to you, don't go to get it.

If you want to match the cant of your bow to your head, try to do it from the waist, not just the head.  You really do look pretty good, and it just may be  something you need to experiment with to get the clearance you need.

Let us know how it's going as you work on this.

Thanks.  That all makes sense.  I do "lay" my head over as I reach full draw.
I'm out of town for the weekend (celebrating my 18 wedding anniversary!) so I will work on it early next week and let you know how it's going.  Thanks a bunch!

I've been hitting my nose some when I shoot and I just went and tried this for about 40 shots.  No hits, now I just have to make it a habit.
Do or do not.  There is no try.

I have been having a similar problem the last 2 weeks. I have shot trade bows since '07 with no issues until 2 weeks ago. Been hitting and chahfing my left cheeck. I'm a lefty so draw side. Shot again this week & same problem but not as harsh. Not sure why, but will try to see if I am laying my head over as well. I shoot 3 under & try to shoot Welches style.

The problem has gotten a lot better.  I'm trying to keep my head and little more upright.  I think what has helped me most is I'm not pressing the string into my lip as hard.  Just a light touch so I know I'm reaching full anchor.  I'm also trying to use Terry's second anchor with my thumb behind my jaw.
