Fletch making contact on shelf above left index finger
« on: December 24, 2011, 07:15:00 PM »
I am trying to tune a new to me Griffin and have been having problems with fletch contact wearing the rest down.  I tried moving the cock feather to different positions but no luck.

I'm shooting a 51# @ 28 Griffin longbow.  I draw about 25.5 inches so I'm estimating the draw weight at my draw length to be about 42#'s.  I'm shooting Axis FMJ 500 30.25 length with 145 grn points.  I am using 3 5 inch LW feathers.  I shoot 3 under and use a glove.

A couple of questions:

1) How tight should the nocks fit the serving?  The X nocks snap on but even a slight tap will cause it to drop off of the string.  If the nock fit is too loose, how do I build up the area under the nock point?

2) Which way should the cock feather be oriented?  I have it pointed to the left slightly angled down.

Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas!

Bill

Don't know if this will help but here goes,

First off, are the arrows shooting good for you, in other words,  are they tuned for the bow at your draw length ? This is very important because if they aren't it would help explain a lot of the possible problem.

I shoot with a feather towards where the rest or shelf area meets the sight window, I leave a small gap here deliberately to allow more room for the feather to pass, this puts the cock feather at 9:00, or out for a right hander. Works pretty good so far on all of my bows.

You could also try odd feather in towards the riser ( sight window ) as long as it is a carbon arrow. I was told this by a very good source and have tried it along with others with very good success.

Sounds like the nocks fit O.K.

Hope this helps.

I would guess your arrow is too stiff and that is why it's making contact. Add a 200 or 250gn point out there and see what happens. Easiest way to see for sure is to bare shaft. you'll see real quick if your arrow is too stiff or weak.

Good luck

Ok I just got back in after testing the FMJ's with my BW PLX 49# @ 28.  Great arrow flight, no contact, no porpoising.  Then I checked the brace height on the Griffin and dropped it down to 7.25 inches.

I tried again and had better arrow flight. It's not as good as when I shot them out of the BW.

I thought for sure the Griffin being at 51#'s would shoot the FMJ's better than the BW at 49#'s.  Not sure what is going on.  The 145 points are the heaviest I can find for the Axis arrows.  If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.  I'd be willing to try other arrows for the Griffin.

Thanks.

The bows may not be cut the same distance from or past center.  This makes a huge difference in proper spine.  Don't worry about matching head to shaft.  I shoot 300 grain heads  on 600 spine shafts.   If your fletch is hitting the shelf the 500 spine is to stiff.  Go to a heavier head or a 600 spine shaft.

gringol,

I tested with 600's and they flew perfectly.  I think the 500's were too stiff.

Thanks!
