Have Issues shooting targets. Shooting 3D objects is no problem.
« on: February 08, 2012, 11:51:00 AM »
I have been shooting for about 3 weeks and have found that I am very good especially with instinctive shooting.  My issue is shooting a target.  When I shoot at objects I'm fine.  I have shot a pencils at 20 yards standing on end no problem and many other objects like it but when it comes to that yellow spot....only sometimes I'm on.  I'm not hitting every pencil I shoot at but my groupings are always right around it.  Has anyone else heard of this or will it go away with time?

It's just a matter of concentration plus you are more interested in shooting objects than targets. It wouldn't worry me unless I was competing in a target match.

Just a thought, maybe its a color issue. Try painting the pencils yellow.

Thanks guys.  I came to the same conclusion today, reddogge.

I figure I wont ever be target shooting anyway so I got a 3D Buck target today.  ;)

aimsmall - That's a good idea too!  I think Im going to bring 3D objects and start hanging them over a target if I decide to try targets again.

the pencil is smaller than the yellow spot. aim small hit small. put a red dot in the middle of the yellow spot and youll hit the yellow spot almost every time.i just experienced the same type of problem. i was shooting at to big of a target. when i made the target smaller i hit the smaller target.

Shooting paper targets can be very difficult when compared to aiming at a 3D target, pencil, a clump of weeds, or a dry cow pie!.  With each of these targets, it is easier to pick an aiming point because their is no bullseye.  With a paper target, you see a yellow, blue, or white bullseye and aim at that circle, not a small point.  I do much better stump shooting at unknown distances than shooting at paper targets at known distances for that reason.  As stated above, aim small, miss small.

I have the same problem with consistency on targets vs. stump shooting. As said above it's a matter of focus.
