Anchor Point question
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:58:00 PM »
It looks like most traditional shooters anchor somewhere around the corner of their mouth and the Olympic shooters all anchor below their chin.
1. Do any of you hold "Olympic" style?
2. Why aren't Olympic shooters holding "trad" style?

Seriously just curious and want to know if there are drawbacks to either style.
Thanks for the insight folks.

The Oly under the chin anchor is due largely to the fact that they shoot with sights and mostly at long range. The under the chin anchor is  a better ergonomic position and also helps with keeping the sight higher. The higher - side of the face anchor we use is to reduce the perceived gap.  Split finger shooters often have a point on range around 50-60 yards and three under shooters a point on of around 30 yards which reduces the gap still more.  Our bare bow methods are more of a point blank method of aiming than the sighted Oly bows.

Wonderful explanation moebow-and thanks. I tried under the chin today and my left/right errors immediately went away. However my vertical was a "challenge". None the less--I think I might stick it out for a couple months and see if I can make it work. It does feel more natural, and easier on the shoulders (I'm getting a little age on me now). again, thanks.

The Oly style anchor, which is a very repeatable one, was probably a more consistent anchor for you... over and under drawing are contributors to left/right misses.

Somewhere between anchoring under your chin and the higher spot of anchoring under your cheekbone is a place where the arrow will fly straight for you....just depends on how your face is shaped.

For me, that place happens to be where the "V" between my thumb/index finger rests at the back of my jawbone, and my index finger is on my eye tooth. Just remember...once there, keep pulling.
