First time form check (videos)
« on: August 01, 2012, 07:28:00 PM »
Started shooting a traditional about 3 months ago and i am having a lot of fun.

Set up: 64" Brackenbury Drifter 62# @28. shooting split fingers with a tab

Just wondering if shooting the way i do is bad for my form. When i shoot, i do not reach my anchor/reference point and hold. when i reach my anchor/reference point in my draw cycle i release the arrow with no pause in draw at all?

Here are the 2 videos of today.

Thanks,
Mike

Well your accuracy is very good. You do however drop your bow arm and your drawing hand flies backwards a bit much. I would try to hold the bow arm still and maybe bring your release hand back and touch your shoulder after release. But you are shooting nice groups so ya can't beat that.

That's pretty good shooting.....how far exactly were those shots?

I like the direction your drawing elbow is going....your energy is directed away from the target.  No problem with your release or follow through.

I do have a couple of things...one a question and the other a suggestion...

Do you absolutely have a positive anchor point that you are hitting and making SOLID contact every time?

Need to work on that bow arm....your alignment looked pretty good, so I stop/started you video and you are dropping your bow are BEFORE you even release the string.  Since you are aligned well, it must be a mental thing like 'peeking' to see where you arrow is going.  Again, it is dropping before you lose the arrow.

Terry, the first video is from 14 steps and the second is from 12 steps. My anchor point is my index finger to the corner of my mouth..i wouldnt consider it "solid".

Thanks guys for spotting the dropping bow arm ill be working on that.

I would say you might be releasing a bit early, a touch before a "solid" anchor. Try to feel that anchor pretty hard before release.

Yep....a solid consistent anchor would definitely help.....and don't be afraid to 'cozy up' to your face and dig in a little to make sure is solid.

I agree to a point with Bullfrog....slowing down would help you as a new shooter....just slow down your draw to half the speed you are now.

Once I learned the shot...and then shot and shot and shot....I evolved into getting my shot off quicker without really trying.  I just started getting on target faster and faster and my shot is one fluid motion with a double anchor.  HH shot fast too.....but again, slowing down in your case just really starting out would benefit you.

Your motion isn't bad, just slow down the draw and get on a bale for a while at close range and don't worry about where your arrow hits, just concentrate on slowing and obtaining a solid anchor.

Mike, this is what I meant about holding your bow arm still after the shot, and how my drawing hand ends up after the release. And anchoring for about 2 seconds. Not that I have the best from in the world, but maybe it will help you out watching me shoot. Videoing yourself is a great way to study your form and look for bad habits.

And here is a video of Terry shooting. Notice his bow arm and drawing hand after the release. Terry hope ya don't mind me posting this here. Roy

Roy...no worries.....his issue is not dropping his bow arm after the shot....he's dropping it before the shot....BTW...your form looks dandy.

Yes he is Terry dropping prior to the shot. I'm thinking those two videos could help Mike keep a more solid bow arm before and after the shot.

Yeah...it could....it almost looks like a mental issue with peeking.....

I'm sure he'll figure it out with all our input...and look forward to seeing another clip in a month.

Pretty consistant and nice accuracy and pull-through release, but you are releasing long before your back muscles are engaged. Slow down a little, get that elbow around and feel those back muscles work. It can only help. The way you are shooting led to bad target panic for me. Keep working at it, you are off to a really good start.
