Arrow spine too weak or too stiff? Maybe bad Form?
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:24:00 PM »
I recently got back into archery and decided I wanted to shoot recurve again instead of compound. My wife bought me a Samick Sage #55 @28" for a good starting bow.

My arrows are 400 spine 8.4 gpi cut at 30 inches and I tried both 125 and 100 grain field points.

I tried shooting off the shelf but I was getting unstable flight in my arrow. I just thought it had to do with form and possibly clearance issues. I read on here that with a elevated rest it made tuning easier and better arrow flight so I put on a bear weatherest. After several attempts to change form and release and getting frustrated I was getting the same results.

My arrows are hitting a little to the left of where I aim and they are impacting crooked into the target with the nock being to the left and point to the right.

Is this a spine issue? Could it be my form and I am torquing the string or getting a bad release. It was happening very consistent no matter what I tried to change with my form and release.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I am NO expert but been on the trad journey for 3 years now and picked up a ton from folks here and dont want to leave you hanging here on your 1st post.
First off not what you are asking but learning or relearning good form at 55# is going to make your job a lot tougher and maybe get some 40 or 45# limbs.
Second, some could be form and from a form issue am curious if you are drawing to 28
Third if your are able to learn on 55# and using ok form the 400 spine maybe stiff with the point weight you are using possibly even at 55#s if you are not drawing 28 and the weight is in the low 50s would make it even worse.  The arrow being too stiff will hit left bare shaft. Do you have any 100 grain inserts or heavier tips 180 to 220 range to try to see if you can weaken it up for a test?
Lastly welcome and enjoy the process!
More bows than I should have!

Thanks for the reply! I dont have any inserts or heavy tips but I am going to pick some up and try out a few different weights. Might order a tip weight test kit online to try out some heavier points. I might just have to order some lighter limbs to work on my form and to be more accurate.

If you are drawing 28" those arrows should be close. Perhaps you nocking point is slightly low? You may want to strip a shaft and shoot a bare shaft and post the results.

After getting frustrated with it I pulled out my knife and stripped off the feathers.I also tried different nocking points and fired the arrow 4 times and all of the results were bad. the nock was way left and the point was stuck in the target to the right. It was even worse than when it was fletched it was at about a 30 degree angle into the target. I shot from around 15 yards to the target.

If in doubt bare shaft .. but anything too far off can show different from reality. If close you should get decent flight with bare shaft if form is decent
