Shoulder Pain
« on: October 12, 2012, 12:21:00 AM »
Changed my form to a solid anchor and holding for 3-5 seconds. Was shooting great but I think it led to an injury. Its been three weeks now and my bow shoulder is still hurting. Can't hold my arm out straight or reach backward.
Anyone want to diagnose my problem?

DP,  Could be many things, impingement, rotator cuff, tendonitus, frozen shoulder, etc.

Even coaches will defer to medical diagnosis first and foremost.  GO SEE A DOCTOR and get it checked out!!!!!!

THEN AFTER seeing the Doctor and finding out what is really wrong with your shoulder and you are cleared to shoot again, first, find a local instructor/coach if possible. Second, post a video so we can see you shoot. Include your bow draw weight information and draw length too.

Best advice I can give you at this time!

Well, doctor says it is a rotator cuff injury. Unclear whether it is a tear, pull, or just inflamed. Got a cortisone shot 2 weeks ago. Feeling much better but still haven't shot a bow in over 2 months. Longest down time from shooting in over 10 years.

Does the doctor know or suspect whether it was caused from shooting your bow?

Doctor didn't comment on the cause. I attribute it completely to shooting. Just 35 shots at targets one afternoon using a new style of holding and shoulder alignment. Was shooting great that after noon but by the end it had messed me up real good.

Rehab seems to be working. I just did three push ups with no pain! Stretching and strength building for a few weeks before I pick up the bow again.

You may also want to see a sports massage therapist as part of your rehab. They are not cheap, but if you get one that will share information, they maybe able to teach you how to self message they area as well.
