Im switching to 3under from split and have a couple questions
« on: December 19, 2012, 03:54:00 PM »
I am in the process (2nd day of shooting this way) of making a switch to shoot 3 under instead of split. I was having issues with my anchor position shooting split causing inconsistent shooting. I like to tilt my head in towards the string and doing that shooting split with my anchor and head postion where I wanted it to be has cause my nose to get chewed up by the string… which apparently is an issue for my wife who has to look at me daily lol.
I now touch my nose to the back end of the feather pointing away from the riser and have a VERY repeatable anchor compared to my form before. This alone made a big difference. Also I slightly changed the bow hand position so that my fingers are in a place that creates less torque and also a position that is easy for me to find time after time.
I am comfortable with those two steps but the one thing that I am having an issue with is where I am putting my finger closest to the nock. If I am off just a little bit the arrow seems to “jump” around a little bit while drawing back. What causes that? I have been reading on here last night and noticed several people mention the use of 2 nocks or tying in a second nock. Is that something that most of you 3under guys do? How do you tie in a nocking point? I think it may help me so that I can just snug my top finger up to the bottom nocking point so that I am on the same spot on the string every time and I was thinking that for hunting it would be better so that I can feel that bottom nock while getting ready for a shot.  What do you use for tying in a bottom nock point and are they easy to move if I need to make adjustments for tuning my broadheads?

Thanks and happy hollidays to you guys,
Levi

While I don't think two nock points a re necessary, it is cheap insurance whether shooting split or three-under. I've seen some pretty convincing slo-mo video of an arrow nock sliding down the string at release. Just can't imagine why it would matter which finger is under the nock. Once the string's gone, it's gone. That said, I now use two nock points tied out of B50 waxed string material. Couldn't be easier, but one video is worth a thousand words. Do a search on here or Youtube for "how to tie a nocking point". The one from SBD string guys is a good one.

Ryan Sanpei's you tube video of an adjustable nocking point is great, even I could do it!

After shooting recurves w/ sights at targets for many years, I too made the switch to 3-under (instinctive) for hunting w/ longbow. I use a single crimp-on nocking point, nock the arrow under it, and touch the index finger glove to the arrow nock. Middle finger anchors in the corner of my mouth, fingernail between 5th and 6th tooth back.

I shoot 3 under with my only nock point UNDER the arrow. Solves the arrow sliding down the string problem. I also use a tied on nock point - the brass ones kept wearing out my shooting glove.  Another issue may be nock fit - are your nocks too loose for your string?

You can't go wrong with two nock points... As far as the arrow "jumping around" that is caused from too much upward pressure being applied to the nock from your grip on the string.
