Overcoming Torque? Need advise
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:08:00 PM »
In shooting the longbow I am getting alot of "flyers".  There are various reasons.  The most common is my inconsistent torque.  To fix this I have tried curling my ring and small finger to take them out of the grip.  Seems to work though somewhat awkward and will be tough with gloves.  Are ther other ways to reduce torque and have all fingers one the bow handle?

Stealth,

Do a search for "grip question" on this forum.  It shows a suggested grip that will reduce bow hand torque.  Many times, it is caused by having the bow grip too deep into the hand.

I tried curling my little finger under for the same reason, but found that it was pressing against the bow handle and creating it's own source of torque.   Now I just let the tips of my last three fingers touch the back of the handle instead.  If you still have torque, it could be coming from the string fingers, so make sure you are pulling straight back on the string with them and have no twisting force.

Thank you both for the advice.  Exactly what I was asking.  I'll also pay attention to the string torque.  The thread Moebow showed is fro October 2010 and is excellent.  It just seems that most pictures I see of the bow hand seems like all four fingers are being used in the grip.  Even your  thread picture gives that illusion, but I do get the point.  Thank you greatly.

I have the same problem as Stealth Man, looking at MoeBows 2010 pictures will give me something to try. This could really solve a mystrey for me. Also the guy I bought the bow said hold it tight (its a R/D longbow) that didnt work for me, things got better when I relaxed the hold, now I think I have to get more thumb pad into the act. Thanx guys.

fmscan,  The harder you try to hold/control the bow, the MORE it will move.  The bow knows what it needs to do.  Most of us have problems trying to control the bow with our bodies/muscles rather than letting the bow set the alignments for us.  All we need to do is provide the direction and let the bow do the rest.

I was taught to hold bow with an open grip... I also use a double loop "string-thing" that attaches to thumb and forefinger which prevents bow from jumping out of my open hand upon release. Can't remember what it's called anymore but I'm sure someone here can assist.
