Shorten draw?
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:13:00 PM »
Has anyone out there had to shorten their draw in order to improve your shooting? I normally draw to about 29.25, but had trouble getting consistent groups;  I shortened mine to 28 by drawing only to the corner of my mouth rather than the cheek bone. My shooting got noticeably better. I don't like the lost draw length but I'll take the accuracy if I continues. Any thoughts?

Yes, many folks seem to want to draw to the side of their faces and set some arbitrary anchor points; rather than drawing to a "bone on bone" structure and THEN finding their references.  Your "anchor" position should be the result of your draw and not a place you draw to and THEN conform your body around.

It is possible that you were overdrawing the bow before. Not as common as underdrawing, but possible. If so, you may well increase your accuracy by shortening your draw.

Some people also feel they increase their accuracy at the tiny targets you sometimes see at tournaments that are placed at a 10-20' distance if they only draw maybe 2/3 normal draw. I've noticed the same thing myself, but I resist the temptation to do it because my mind is always looking for opportunities to short-draw, and I don't want to give it any excuses, even if they are legitimate ones.

But anyway, for normal shots at normal targets, as Arne says, you have an optimal draw length, that doesn't have anything to do with an arbitrary anchor position, and is based on your body being in correct alignment at full draw. You need to find out what that is, locate a convenient anchor for that draw length, and then stick with it.

thanks guys, I have had trouble establishing a consistent draw length & anchor point; part of it is that I want to have that extra performance that comes from a 29+ draw. I am going to focus my effort on finding that consistent anchor and live with it even if is shorter than I want.
