Wanting suggestions

I've been shooting my longbow for almost a year now.  I hunted with it a lot last season, but end with two misses.  My main goal is to kill deer, but I'd also like to increase my accuracy on the 3d range.  Here are a few videos, let me hear your suggestions for improvement.

You are looking very good to my eye.  Nice and still during the draw, good alignment at full draw and a pretty good follow through.

From the videos, I don't think I'd recommend much in the way of change.  Here are a couple things to think about though and see IF you are doing them as they can't really be seen on the video.

First, are you pulling that string shoulder back as you release?  I can't see much if any movement there as the shot breaks which makes me wonder IF you are loosing back tension at the last moment.  Another reason I suggest this is that your string hand does "pop" out from your face a little more than it should.

Second, your release looks a little forced and mechanical.  Kind of like you are working to get the string out of a groove that may have formed in the glove.  Again, not something I can see just a hunch.  The release is one of the hardest things to really get down(at least it was for me) and it just takes practice and concentration on it.

These are JUST thoughts based on what I can see.  Check them out for yourself and see If you agree or not.  If not, THAT IS OK!! You know more about what you FEEL than I can from the videos.

wow, I hope I look that good when I shoot!

what is the make/ modle of bow? draw weight?


I went up 7#'s and I am trying very hard not to loose components of my form that I know I had with my prior bow (recurve, now longbow) its a tough change for me. the reason I mention this is it looks like your holding your bow very upright- I shoot my recurve like a compopund bow straight up and down but my longbow I have to cant to get the arrow to fly where I want it to go!

Moe, I have noticed your comments on other threads about the string hand flying out & I find sometimes it worse than others for me.  I'll work on it & see what I can do.  I'm shooting a cheap glove that's getting old it may very well be a problem.  If I shoot my black widow tab with the bow canted I get alot of face & lip contact.  Any idea why this is the case?  

I feel my shot is mechanical.  I'm really working on this because I feel it hurts in hunting situations.

LR it's a 64" Fedora xcellator 48# @ 28.  I'm drawing 28 1/4".  I started canted then went straight up, & now I'm back to a little cant.

How long is your tab when you have a good hook on the string??  It should be 1/4 to 3/8 inch SHORT of the tips of your fingers.  Many times "face contact" is a result of too long a tab and not something we are doing on our shot.  Might be worth a check.

A very common cause of the string hand flying out (but certainly not the only one) is the loss of back tension.  This can happen when you start to think about release, your mind goes to the string arm/hand and we revert to arm power instead of back power.

You will be surprised at how a worn glove or tab that doesn't fit right will effect your shooting, especially if your still trying to get your shooting down, I watched your video's and they look very good, just keep it going and you'll find what your looking for soon.

I can shoot either by canting or straight up, I find that by slightly canting I can get a better sight window, but that is for me.

I think some blind bale shooting at this time might help you cement it down.

Boy are you in the right place seeking improvement. To my imcompetent eye your form looks great.  PS Be sure to keep checking your arrow knocks that hit that floor to look for little fractures.  Lou

Brian, your shooting form looks near textbook. If however, I were to nit pick with an especially critical eye, you're shot sequence could use a touch more of that fluid, effortless quality. As moebow touched on, the release appears just a bit "forced", as if you are trying to fling your fingers open instead of just letting the string slip from them. Along with the other suggestions about the glove and tab. I would make certain that your anchor has not become a stopping point that you "nestle" into, but rather a temporary place of contact your fingertips encounter on their way to your follow through position. Concentrate on a relaxed hand and make certain you are not putting sideways force on the string by pulling it into your face at anchor. As you know, I am  a hunter and not a target archer, so my opinions are skewed in that direction and may not be well suited to target archery.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I'm get to working on my release over the next couple of weeks & see if I can smooth it out.  

Swine you know my main goal is to kill deer, hopefully punching paper & foam all summer will help me reach that goal.  Them MS deer better look out next Oct I'm coming armed with plenty of arras!!!
