Keeping your eye on the spot?
« on: July 16, 2013, 03:33:00 PM »
I have noticed that I sometimes lose concentration while trying to focus on the spot I want to hit. What I mean is I often pick a spot before my draw but that sometime during the draw I lose it or am not staying totally focused on it. Anybody have any tips for "burning a hole" in the spot you wanna hit?

Dont start too soon. Very hard for most people to "burn a hole" for more than a couple two or three seconds. Look at your general area you want to hit then really start your concentration about half draw.

4dogs is pretty close.  Look at what you want to hit at the start, but don't try to "burn a hole" until at full draw.  Allows focused concentration when ready to shoot, no need to do it too soon.

Yea. Let me rephrase that. I pick a spot before I draw then I'm just looking at the general area. The problem I'm having is not getting refocused on that spot and really bearing down on it before release. I think alot of missed shots at game animals is also a result of this. Any other tips? Thanks so far guys!

When you get to a certain point in your shot sequence, you just have to create a check on your checklist that now is the time to really focus on the spot you want to hit.  For me, using the Rick Welch method, it would be during the 2 second hold, after I have rechecked my alignment and made sure my string hand and forearm is relaxed.

Are you going to forget to do it?  Sure.  Just like I forget over and over again to follow through. But I guess if you are at the point where you are aware of when you forget to do it, like I am with forgetting to follow through, then at least that's better than missing and having no idea why.

I look in the "ribs" when I begin to draw . when the finger touches my mouth it triggers a focus on the spot. As I tighten and begin to pull through the focus continues to get smaller till the arrow is gone. I had to make myself say "hold, hold" once I touched my anchor until this became auto. Now I don`t think about it. automatic!!RC

Thanks guys. I prolly should have added that I adopted Rick Welches method after taking lessons from him. It works well for me. And you are right McDave!  It is nice to know when I miss WHY I miss. Rick was a big help on that for me. Makes it all even more fun! RC I am going to try that. That seems like it would work well for how I shoot!
