question about clickers
« on: July 21, 2013, 02:55:00 AM »
Last time I posted I was having some muscle issues that I felt may keep me down from my recurves this year but I seem to be overcoming the issues. I've had some physical and steroid therapy which has helped a lot. I've been shooting primarily short sessions and mostly only 1 or two shots at a time and no more than 3.

I was surprised to see my shooting came back fairly quickly but my goal last year was to get proficient out to 40yds since I'll be hunting a combination of wooded and open country for mulies and elk. I'm making good progress with probably 70% of my shots at 30 and 40yds in the kill zone of the small Delta 3D buck I have.  I have noticed most of my misses are low and I think I'm short stroking my draw. I had seen these clickers but I didn't know if they worked very well or if they were something that would spook game.

At least I'll be able to shoot my recurve this year, I was afraid I'd have to go back to training wheels. I have a bow I bought basicly new for cheap because the guys girlfriend couldn't shoot it even turn down. I quickly remembered why I switched back to traditional after listening to all the noise, making dozens of mechanical adjustments and having release aid malfunctions.  I also noticed the difference in penetration between the compound and my recurve isn't as large as you'd think.

I'm shooting my 66# Stealth with Carbon Express CX Select 350's and Gold Tip 55/75's with my compound set at 60# and rated at 320fps but the arrows are only penetrating about 2"'s further than the recurve. I am using 200gr field points with the Stealth and 85gr with compound and for broadheads I have the 195gr Tree Sharks which make the 85gr Thunderheads on the compound look like toys.

Anyways I'd appreciate any info on the clicker you can give me.
Thanks,
Rod

Firstly, the clicker will not spook game. There are plenty of ways to quite them down so you simply feel the click rather than hear it. As far as shooting at further distances, ,,, this is where I see the most improvement in my shooting with a clicker. The consistent draw length really helps me after about 25 yards.

If you do choose to shoot a clicker, remember to use your back or rear deltoid (shoulder) muscles, as tension in the forearm or fingers to achieve the "click" with greatly hinder accuracy.

Good luck!

Take the clicker apart and replace the chain with cord to avoid th clank of the chain.    You have to attach the cord to the flat portion of clicker with out impeding the full movement of the clicker.  I run the cord through the hole on the flat part of clicker and melt the cord so that it mushrooms out to prevent the cord from being pulled out of hole but let the flat piece move back and forth to make the clicking sound.   Secondly, I wrap the flat piece of metal with duct tape or electric tape to reduce the click noise a little or a lot.  I can not hear my clicker but can feel  it through the riser.  I hunt deer mere 7 to 10 yards away and any noise spooks em.  It has helped me with avoiding short draws and *** .  I also have been able to get consistent pass through s since I'm not short drawing.   Good luck..
