Three under to split... Shooting high
« on: January 16, 2014, 03:48:00 PM »
Went from three under to split. Always shooting high now unless a focus on holding low but then I think I become somewhat of a gap shooter rather than instinctive. Is this an anchor point issue ? Thanks Guys

I'd say no. I'd say you need to reprogram your brain for split. GIve it time. Start at short ranges (10-12 yards) and let it work itself out.

If you anchor in the exact same position split as you did when you shot three under, then it is an anchor point issue.  If you anchor in exactly the same position, a split finger grip on the string actually lowers the nock end of the arrow on your face. That causes the arrow to shoot higher.

Should be able to overcome it with a little practice.  Your brain will reprogram for the different trajectory.  Or, can just raise your anchor point (one finger distance) when you shoot split.

I'm assuming you were anchoring the index finger with three under. With split if you anchor your bird finger you will be real close with the same sight picture. If you want to keep index finger anchor you will have to retrain your brain. Stay with it it'll come around.

Well if you are anchoring the same then I feel this is normal for 'aimers'. The arrow shaft/point might be what you are concentrating on in your peripheral vision and it will throw an arrow higher. BTW that is why I switched to split; to shoot longer distances.

I cant speak for 'instinctive' shooters.  When I switched from three under to spit my arrows were high for a bit of time until I adjusted my aiming method.....I still get fliers though     :banghead:

Yes, bump up your anchor to middle finger and you will adjust pretty quickly. I know a couple of guys who anchor even higher.

I think that's a pretty common outcome when going from three under to split or vice versa, unless you change your anchor points like the guys said above.

I shoot split but have spent quite a bit of time with three under too (I keep the same anchor points).  I find three under more "natural" for closer distances and split more "natural" for slightly longer distances.  Much as I like split finger I struggle with shooting high until the range gets out past 12-15 yards or so.  Everything's a compromise.

When I try to go split I shoot waaaaaay high with the same anchor. So I stay with three under, I'm to old to retrain myself......lol!

Hey chain 2..why would u want to change something if its working.. I was shoot split and was shooting high..I changed to 3 under and it was corrected.. I knock in with my second finger at the corner of my mouth and put the tip of the arrow on the target with both eyes open.. I guess that is gap shooting and I could be wrg but I believe Howard Hill was a gap shooter..if it worked for him I'm good with it..If it ain't broke don't fix it..establish a system that works for u and stay with it.. perfect it.. We r all different.. what works for someone else may not work for u..most of all have fun with it..it's suppose to be fun..hope this helps..

Did you adjust your nock point? It generally needs to be higher when shooting 3 under than it does shooting split.

I have the same issue with split. Want to shoot high up close. Any ideas on why?

I think for me the shooting high up close with split issue is probably due to the large gaps.  Three under up close or split from further back brings the arrow more into my peripheral vision.

I shoot better when the arrow is part of my field of vision, without having to consciously look for it.  I don't actually aim with the shaft or point but I like to know where it is.

Switching from split fingers to 3 under, your subconcious mind tells you that "You're aiming too high, lower the bow!!" Reverse that in this sitution. Your gaps will be differnt. Shooting 3 under brings the arrow up closer to your eye especially if you're anchoring with the middle finger in the corner of your mouth. Find out where your " point on" is while shooting 3 under, keep moving back ( if you can ) until the point of your arrow is on the target. I'm guessing but with a 35# bow @28" the point on will be around 30 yds. Once you know where your 'point on' is you'll be able to gap ( estimating the apparent distance between the point of your arrow and the target) better, when you go beyond your 3 under point on, switch back to split finger, and find that "point on". Now you are begining to "walk the string". Add changing anchor fingers and you're face walking. This was copied from a post I made this morning over on MartinTech Traditional forum, those guys were shooting 35# bows and asked this question in reverse.   :D

I think I have the shooting high licked. I liked the aim lower post, I think that is what I wound up doing. Thanks guys.
