Anchor point, suggestions?
« on: June 01, 2014, 12:28:00 PM »
The answer to this question is probably in one of the other threads, which mostly go over my head. So,

I anchor with my trigger finger in the corner of my mouth. It seems very comfortable and natural. But I have noticed that my arrows consistently go an inch or so to the left at less than 15 yards. And left by 10 or so inches at 30something yards. That's what happens when I just take the shot without consciously making a correction. I moved my anchor point to touching my canine tooth with my trigger finger and it worked very well to correct the problem. But it feels pretty bad, I'm all off balance and it feel like it takes twice as much effort to hold the string back.
Maybe there is a way to fix this I haven't though of.  Thoughts?

frank,

There is no easy way to answer your question without seeing what you are doing. And you may not (probably  won't) like this suggestion.

In general, I'll suggest this. Your anchor references on your face should be the result of your draw, NOT a target of the draw.  You shouldn't arbitrarily decide to place your hand at some point on your face.  You draw to establish bone on bone structure (ideally with back tension) and THEN find where your hand should be (it ends up where it ends up, not where you THINK you should put it).  Getting your body's structure (form) correct is far more important than where your hand is placed.

Left/right errors are frequently the result of alignment - which leads to stability in the shot.

Ok, give me some bone on bone examples and I'll see if something works well.
 Can you do that?

You might take a look at these videos and see if that helps any.  Try release tips and the rubber band videos.   https://www.youtube.com/user/TheMoebow1

Basically, bone on bone refers to bone support from the bow wrist to the string side shoulder.  If you get those bones lined up, you will feel as though the bow gets lighter in draw weight at full draw.  If you find that, that is when you find out where your hand should be.  It is kind of like standing on your legs, you support your upper body weight on the bones of your legs and not with muscle.

There are more bones to line up in the archery shot, to be sure, but the idea is the same.

Wow, a lot more complicated than I thought. I was afraid of that. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I get it now. Not that complicated after all. The draw stroke is actually the same as when I shot compound in competition. At that time I wore a blister into my jaw from where I anchored on my jawbone. I'll give it a go. I hope I don't need longer arrows.
 Thanks for the help.
