Target Panic...
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:04:00 PM »
What has worked for you?

I used to be a pretty good shot. Had a lot of success on deer and pigs. The last 1-2 years has been hit or miss...mostly miss. I have it bad.

Relearn the process of shooting with a loop of string, then a bow you are unfamiliar with (very light draw weight).

Then most important place more emphasis on the process than the result. Target panic often results when one misses and feels bad about it. We will all miss...often. But the process is 100% within our control.

The gimmicks of closed eyes, blank bales, drawing without shooting, etc. are all just short term "fixes" at best. The problem is wrong thinking.

For me , I will count to at least 3 seconds before I release .
I also will let down if the shot doesn't feel right .
If you flinch while at full draw , let down and start over .
Eventually you won't have to count any more .

The clicker has worked for me. Some will say it's a crutch but I don't care. I'm consistent with my draw length now and the "click" helped re-train my brain. Worth a go for $15.

The secret is to be able to let down when you feel nervous or unable to complete your draw. There is a reluctance on the part of most of us to let down, but it really does help.

The second secret is to take the release away from the subconscious. This is really Joel Turner's whole program, and while I've tried to explain it in the past, Joel is still willing to talk people through it on the phone.  As long as he is willing to do that, why not get it straight from the horse's mouth?

He cured my target panic, that I had been suffering from off and on for years.

X4 for Joel.

Spot on.

He has come up with the only explanation for target panic that makes sense to me.
TP is not fear of missing, anxiety or loss of confidence. It is loss of shot control. The above stuff comes after control is lost imho.
Once I realized this after talking to Joel and watching his video things started improving dramatically.
"Target Panic" is a terrible description of the condition and I'd even go as far to say it contributes to the problem. Once I realized panic had nothing to do with it I was on the road to recovering control.

And letting down if it doesn't feel right is huge. You don't have to shoot just because you've pulled the string.
Old doesn't start until you hit three figures...and then it's negotiable

What Graps said. I draw and hold without releasing an arrow forcing myself to not let go of the string until I decide to.

Learning to let down is one of the biggest helps to me. I also do lots of thinking telling my self to anchor, expand and aim and then release. I'm more of a gapper so I shoot a little more deliberately than a lot of guys.

Learn to not be afraid of shooting when in the woods. Stump shooting REALLY helped my target panic. Also bring a load of arrows and don't worry about breaking/losing them by taking risky shots. Can get pricy but the best way I know of after 25 years of shooting.
