hitting high
« on: November 16, 2015, 06:46:00 PM »
One of my bows ( 56" static recurve take down ) is hitting high. I have tried various nock heights ( up to 5/8 ), brace height ,  and nothing seems to help. I shoot 3 under. I shoot instinctive and the bow seems to want to point high as I draw. I can improve this if I gap shoot. All my other recurves and longbows " hit where I'm lookin ". Any thoughts on the cause ??
Could this be a tillering problem ??

I would say 5/8" is about normal for nock height for 3 under. 3/4" or 7/8" is not unusual.  If you have no form problems that might be causing the high misses, you might want to try a higher nock height.

The only way I can tell if my nock point is right is to bare shaft.  If you can't get a bare shaft to fly straight at any reasonable nock height, then you might have a tillering problem.

There could be something about your grip that makes you want to point high as you draw.  Is it more of a straight grip and you're used to a more contoured grip that gives you some support in the heel area of your hand, maybe?

I agree with Dave. I had a problem with shooting high, using a low grip with bows meant for medium/high wrist. Since going to bows with straight grips, no more shooting high. I think a person should match bow grip to the way they want to shoot.

I found that shooting high in most cases for me was a low nock point
