Strong bow arm but without tension in it?
« on: July 12, 2016, 12:05:00 AM »
Hello,
I've been working on my form and trying to keep my bow arm solid and pointed at the target so that it's properly aimed at the target, until the arrow has cleared the bow.
BUT I also want to make sure I don't tense my hand and torque the bow.
Do you visualize pushing from the shoulder towards the target? Or from the wrist so that the hand is relaxed?
Opinions?
Thanks!

When I switched from a high wrist grip to a low wrist I found it was much easier to keep my hand relaxed.   That may or may not be the case with others.

With the low wrist I focus the pressure on the bow on the meaty part of my palm at the base of the thumb, in line with radius bone in my forearm.

Shooting instinctively (maybe split vision) I focus on pushing that pressure point at the spot I am focusing on. My bow arm shoulder follows along but I don't focus on it.

It works for me. But in sure there are many others who do it differently.

I agree. IMO it is almost impossible to keep a relaxed bow arm/hand with a high-wrist grip. It's just not a strong position. I don't think "pushing towards the target" is helpful at all. Just focus on gently gripping the bow with the pressure at the base of your thumb and in line with the bones of the forearm (as stated above). If you start the draw with a relaxed, open hand the bow will tell you how to grip it - don't fight it. Think bone on bone, pressure in line with forearm, elbow pointed at 9:00,shoulder down and in the socket.
