Formaster trainer Vs Terry Greens method
« on: June 22, 2017, 01:50:00 PM »
Is the formaster shot trainer sold by 3Rivers Archery compatable with the Terry Green method of shooting?

Reason I ask is from everything I have read the Formaster may help me a lot with my learning to shoot properly with a recurve but as I like what I have seen and read about Terry Green's method. I think that's the form I will be trying to mimick and perfect over the next couple of years.

BUT I do not want to start using something that will cause problems for me regarding Terry Green's form, if that makes sense.

I want to be the best shot maker I can possably be when I go hunting, not a confused shooter out there.

Absolutely!  Terry describes the draw as a "J" like motion of the string arm elbow.  My description is as a rotational or angular draw motion but just different labels for the same thing.  The Form master will teach you how to draw with back tension and a relaxed forearm better than any device I have encountered.

Like Arne said, the formmaster and Terry's form are compatable. That said, how ever you draw the string back, when you get to proper alignment (The Magic T), good things will happen.

I have never used a form master....but I know what it was designed for and I certainly don't think is will hurt to use one.

I don't think there is a 'vs'....both the form master and I are achieving the same thing.

+1

As an aside, I found another use for a Formaster recently.  Since retiring, my wife and I are taking more extended trips in our trailer.  I don't like to go more than a day or two without shooting, so I take a bow and arrows along.  Sometimes, we stay in places where I can set up a target and shoot, but a lot of times, there are people all around and I would get in trouble if anyone saw me shooting the bow.  On those times, I've found that I can draw and shoot the bow (without an arrow) with the Formaster while sitting on the sofa inside my trailer.  I could still draw the bow, and keep my strength up, without the Formaster, but I think releasing the shot adds something to the practice, and keeps me honest about my back tension.

I've read about people doing the same thing in their deer stand, to keep their muscles loose.  I don't know if that would be advisable, due to the movement and slight amount of noise involved, but for a fidgety person like me, it might not be much more movement and noise than I make on my own anyway.

Took a two day course with Rod Jenkins and he gave us all one to practice with in the course.  Great aid and will help you draw correctly  I have one that I use every few weeks just to keep myself honest.
