learning the tab update.
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:59:00 AM »
Hey guys, still working on learning to shoot with a tab. Don't think ill ever give up my glove but I'm getting good results with a Black Widow three under I purchased from Three Rivers also with one I made. The BW is kinda stiff but works great with my new 55#, not as clean on the lower poundage. I use a thinner one with my 45# and 35# and get tight groups out to 20 yards. I'm wondering to what degree is the  thickness/stiffness of the tab in relation to draw weight a personal preference, and how much has to do with the actual mechanics of the string and tabs ability to work together at different draw weights and tab stiffness? I would just like to research that but cant find much on it. I'm pretty sure I got it figured out but that kinda thinking has gotten me in trouble before.
  Thanks Guys.

I use Black Widow split fingertabs.  They do take some use to "break in".  Hundreds and hundreds of shots for me.

I think it is ALL personal preference.  And no real correlation beween bow weights.  I shot my most powerful recurve with a single thickness cordovan leather tab.

It can also matter how you trim a tab to customize it to your fingers - or whether you don't.  And deep hook vs. finger pad, etc., etc.

That's kinda what I was thinking. The one I made from cordovan I like as it allows my to feel the string so to speak. Don't believe I have hundreds of shots on the BW yet so probably just needs some more break in. Ill also stick to making my own but I bought the BW just to make sure it was my being new to a tab and not my design. Bought a large and doesn't seem to need any trimming best I can tell.

I have always been a glove shooter my thoughts the  glove seemed to give me better control of the shot that said, I am trying some different tabs right now. One issue was not knowing what size to order and there doesn't seemed to a sizing chart for this so I am trying different sizes right now to get the right feel for me. .They all feel a little different.

VERY MUCH agree!!!

I shoot split fingers, and rt. handed. I have a couple of fingers that more or less resemble a snake that's eaten a basketball.       Really swollen knuckles, and of course, one of those is the middle one on my right hand. The one that's supposed to go through the loop in the tab....

I ordered a Large Wyandotte Calf Hair tab from 3Rivers, sized/measured the way they describe at their website and in their catalog. But the loop for the middle finger to go through is REALLY tight on that one, and I could feel the string kinda "pinching" on the upper side of my index finger, and the lower side of my ring finger. So I bought one sized Extra Large. The "string pinch" feeling was a bit better, but the hole for my middle finger is the same size as the Large-sized tab is. Still too tight.    :(

I'm back to using my glove.

For what it's worth, I did shoot consistently better groups with my compound bow (with all it's sights & such) with a tab. For whatever reason (possibly increased holding weight at full draw???      )  , that never transferred over when I got my recurve bow.....

IMO the tabs with the hole for the middle are a poor design - no adjustability. Try one with an adjustable finger loop like Black Widow or Bateman. Trust me, I've tried them all and now make my own loosely based on the Bateman.

I use a small Saker tab. My palm measures 3.5 inches across. I shoot with a deep hook split finger.I also trimmed the tab so the leading edge while my finger are curled comes even with the tips of my middle finger. Also cordovan leather (horse hide)is  slicker than any other leather for me that I have tried and I have tried a lot of tabs.Saker tabs are on the pricey side but well worth the money. The leather is replaceable.
