we usually made them with Indian type marinades back in India, great for curries and kababs. Here's a toned down mild version.
4 lbs venison
2tablespoons garlic paste
1tablespoon ginger paste
1tablespoon fresh ground coriander
1tablespoon fresh ground cumin
1/2tsp cinnamon powder
1/4 tsp clove powder
hot chili powder to taste
salt to taste
1 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 cup oil
make gashes in the meat
combine all the ingredients to make a paste and rub all over the meat and let marinate for 4-6 hours.Slow roast over hard wood charcoal basting with leftover marinade.
Hope you like it.

Would a tandoori style yogurt based marinade work well?  I've never given thought to something in this style before with a piece of venison.  I always either roasted it, quick grill, quick saute, or stewed it.  Given that it is a lean meat, and the yogurt would help to keep it moist during a high heat cooking method, I'm curious as yo what you think about it.

It would definately work,I would suggest that you rub any big roast that you plan to wo with pureed raw papaya as it works like a tenderizer and reduces cooking time,if you cant get raw papaya use kiwi fruit or juice from a pineapple, make sure you make deep gouges in the meat to help the marinade penetrate well.,to make it even more flavourful you can make a mixture of the ginger/garlic paste salt pepper and malt vinager and marinate the meat in that for 4 hours and then add the rest of the ingredients.
