40-45's is fine to start. 62"-64" will work great as a bow length. Don't "over bow" with a too heavy draw weight trying to learn correct, good shooting form. Find a good used bow and have fun..

I am sure Vince will set me up right. I have a good idea what to expect and I am anxious to get a bow. My brother shoots a compound bow so maybe, even though they aren't the same, he can still help out with my learning.

Im sticking with my own advice and suggesting getting a nice cheap Bear Grizzly at 40-45 lbs and having at it.  These are excellent bows that you will never have to sell because you cant stop shooting them.

Granted it is a recurve and your looking for a longbow but i think it may be easier to learn on a center shot recurve
Silence over speed.  Heavier arrows never hurt.

It will be worth the drive to see John Sullins at Sipsey River. You can shoot several different style of bows and see what you like. You don't have to buy one. John is a great guy to deal with. While you are there look at Jim Gaineys BlackCreek Banshee. It is a great shooting longbow.
