Africa vs Australia for trip with spouse
« on: February 02, 2006, 02:36:00 PM »
I am considering a trip to Africa or Australia in the next few years.  My wife would come with me but is a non hunter. Which destination would be better as for as activities for her? I would lean towards Australia myself but think maybe Africa would be a better choice for both of us.

What are some other things I should consider when considering Africa or Australia? Hunting wise, different species, length of hunt etc. Those that have been on both if you could contrast them it would be great.

Thanks for the input...........

I have been to Africa and I am going to Australia in May and I am not married so take this with a grain of salt but from what I have seen and researched is that either one would be a great place to take the spouse.  There is more variety in Africa but Australia has more than aenough to occupy your hunting desires and the overall cost will be about half of the cost for a trip to Africa. I've been to both multiple times. They are both awesome destinations, it just breaks down to what you want. Most of the places in Africa are going to have more deluxe accomodations and gourmet quality food. There is also the variety of animals. There is of course a few different countries that you could hunt in, in Africa and there may be some stability/safety cocerns.
Australia, is similar to the US in many ways, but with about 1/20 the amount of people. There are lots of species to hunt, but they may not all be in the same areas and they are mostly imported species, although that dosn't really matter since most of them have been there for a very long time and some such as bantang can't be hunted anywhere else in the world. One thing to remember about Africa and some people make a big deal about it, all the amimals you may see, MAY be native to AFRICA, but that dosn't mean they are native to the area you are hunting and they may not have even been born there.

My wife and I have been to both countries on several occasions. Our favorite is Namibia, both for sight-seeing and bowhunting. And the animals where I hunt were born there.

I am more concerned about the accomodations and activities for her. She ain't a rough it kinda gal. Australia appeals to me for the hog action I have heard about. I just don't want her to be bored while I am hunting.

As a veteran of many trips to both places I can offer some thoughts. Lori always goes with me, but of course she hardly qualifies as a non-hunter! Of course, both are huge places and it depends a lot on your destination and agenda. In the Bush, African accomdations and food tend to be first rate, any anyone with any interest at all in nature and wildlife should never get bored. On the other hand, with a few exceptions, cities in Africa aren't much fun, and touring on your own there is best reserved for experienced international travelers. On the other hand, many parts of Australia, particularly the long Queensland coast between Brisbane and Cairns, are incredible -- as beautiful as Hawaii, with much cheaper prices and far fewer people. I can think of a couple of super Australian hunting destinations that a non-hunting spouse would likely enjoy for a week because of great accomodations and scenic beauty -- feel free to get back to me if you want specifics. Before or after your hunt, I'd rent a car, drive the coast meet some great people, dine on fabulous seafood, enjoy the beaches, fish, whatever, all for very reasonable cost. I've done the same in Africa... but I was looking over my shoulder all the time. Note: you will have to learn to drive on the "wrong" side of the road in both places. Don

Hello to everyone,
I went with all my family a few years ago to Africa. There there was not only my mother, also my two sister (that I promise the dont usually go to the outdoors) and my little brother.

My father and I went a few days before to shoot some animals in the delta, and the last days of the hunt the rest of the family joined us. Then after three days of hunting with them, we all went to visit some photographic camps. Two in the delta, and the other one in the dessert(was excellent, sleeping in the middle of nowhere, dribing quads througth the plains, learning about bushman..)

We all had a really good time, and saw a lot of animals. I strongly recommend you going to botswana, Im sure your wife will enjoy as much as us did.Beatifull place, good weather, good camps and I think that if your wife has never been to africa, need to see all those wonderfull and awesome animals. And I am sure you would not mind to shoot some of the game!!hahaha

Sorry for my english, and from Spain..

Pedro
