Rhino??
« on: September 08, 2006, 11:24:00 AM »
Greetings:
Last night, I was watching the Three Rivers Archery "Africa" hunting video.  (Dale, Denny, etc.)  Good stuff.

One segment shows the gang encountering rhino's in the brush, with some good footage, although they were not there to actually hunt rhino's.

But, it got me thinking: how hard are they to bring down?  I know it's been done, but they look like tanks, appear to be bigger than cape buff, etc.

Are they hard to stalk?
Forgive my ignorance on this one, but can anyone provide any info or first hand knowledge?
Thanks,
Rich

They are "true" Dinos - and I never would want to shoot one. They are just to unique and I like to watch them alive.
As they have poor eyesight you can get real close - in fact closer then you might want to!
One late evening in 2004 I was looking after an arrow I had overshoot a VERY nice Duiker with - whilest my PH was already gone fetching the truck - when out of nowhere two White Rhinos appeared behind me       ! I nearly sh.t my pants and was running for my little life - as were the Rhinos - in opposit direction - ufff!     :o     There was also a Black Rhino cow with yearling in the area and I think she would have charged me AT ONCE.

This one is from last year and I was more comfortable here as I was able to picture him from the "safty" of a car:

I know this is by no means an answer to your question but you might enjoy the BIG fellow?! Notice those ribs ...

Falk: outstanding story!!  Great photo, too.

Bowspirit:  Was it on this "dangerous game" page?
I looked, but didnt see anything...   I'll look deeper, no sense "inventing the wheel, again".

Amazing stuff.  Thanks guys,
Rich

Oh, and Rich...they're ALOT bigger than Cape buffalo. A cape buff max's out at 2000 pounds. A full-grown bull rhino...about 6,000, though sometimes more.

I've been doing some research on this one too, I have come up with 4 people who have taken Black Rhino with traditional equipment, Bill Negley, Bob Swinehart, Robert Eastman, and Howard Hill, (finished with firearm) and two with a possible third who have taken White Rhino with traditional equipment, Monty Browning and Dr. Ed Asby. I know that Steve Kobrine was using mostly traditional equipment when he started hunting Africa but I can't find any documentation on his rhino hunt.

Lucas...talk to Ashby about his rhino. Interesting stuff right there...

There's a picture on the SCI record book where Steve Kobrine is shown next to a Rhino and he's a Black Widow style bow. I don't know much more than that. I'd like to know more about Monty's rhino too.

Ted Nugent stuck an arrow in one a few years ago and it ran off with his arrow, it made the front page of the paper in Jo'berg, not good for bowhunters.
I was riding back one night with a PH in SA in an open Land Rover and a white rhino ran out into the headlights. The PH quickly turned the headlights OFF. I said "no leave them on, I want to see him", he said," no, rhinos are really stupid and they will run right into the headlights!, I said, "oh, leave them off!".
