About 10 yrs ago a buddy and I were hunting deer just after a fresh snow.  The plan was for me to sit  out at a point, and he would go around the mountain and eventually end up on top while I watched for anything he might kick out to come around the point.  So I found a spot about 75 yds down from the top where i could see a good way down the point.  After a while my buddy comes down off the top to where I was sitting and says "you gotta come see something."  So we go up to the top of the ridge and he shows me where a black bear had followed my tracks out to the point, and then sat down, about 75 yds above me, watching down to where I was sitting.  I never saw or heard the bear.  I was never in any real danger, as I was rifle hunting at the time, but it still puts a spook in you, that's for sure.

It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Why is it that some of MY best stories happen before season or without a tag? I swear Alaskan brownies and griz bears know whether or not a guy has a tag and have the seasons written on thier calendars!!!

When one of us has a brownie tag on Kodiak and we have deer hanging around camp ya gotta go miles to find 'em. Without a tag, they're stealing deer from ya left and right!!

I never been stalked but once while Grouse hunting in the Ochoco's of Oregon I walked into a large black bear with his face burried in the middle of a range calf. We were about ten yards from each other. He looked up with his bloody face, let out a woof and we both backed away.
It was a good lesson in paying attention.
Sometimes you have to hoist the black flag, get your hands dirty and start slitting throats!
