Know any good black bear outfitters ?
« on: March 07, 2008, 01:14:00 PM »
I am starting my search for a good black bear outfitter. I would like to hunt on the ground, preferably spot & stalk but may do bait style hunt. Would like someone who caters to traditional archers , knows how to get you close. I would like an outfitter known for big bears , I will probably only shoot one bear in my lifetime & would like to be 350lbs or better. Thanks for the help , any contact info would be great . Thanks, John

Check out going hunting .com aka United Guide and outfitter. Hunted with him last year, spot and stalk. Saw 39 bears in 6 days.Turned down shot ops, then blew the shot on the bear I wanted.

Check out World Class outfitting Adventures.  They hunt out of the Selway in Idaho.  Big Bears and different color phases if thats what your after. Blacks, Browns, Cinammons & blonds. These are pack in mule trips.  Brought my wife along too. She loved it.

A great outfitter that I've used twice is La Griffe Dours.  It is located about 100 miles east of Montreal.  Big bears over bait.  The outfitter's name is Yvon Champagne.

S! I a'int no guide service and can't turn you loose on 100 of acres but I do need help paying the tax man and we do see some bears on the property. I can't set you loose with your 'gang' cause I'll be hunting too but I can always make room for another-brother-in wood. Shhhhhhh.. The camp is called "What Bear" in PA. 350 is kinda a skill on the hunter's part. In other words..we checked in a 636 pounder but I've seen most call a 200pounder..350. We don't allow taking teddy. Email me and we can talk about 'company'.

I know of two excellent spot n stalk outfitters.

One is in British Columbia (Michael Schneider) the other is in Idaho really close to the Canadian border. They saw over 60 bears in four days last fall.

If you want to stay in the lower 48 Idaho is the place for spot n stalk Black Bears...

PM if you need more info.

There is only one IMO, that is Walter's Wilderness Camp in Carrot River Sask.  I have been there a ew times and it and the bears are nothing short os awesome.  The staff there is great and the number and size of bears is unbelievable.  All the shots are setup with trad bows in mind and it is archery only.  My best yet there is a little over 400 lb boar, the video is here somewhere you can see how close and perfect the setups are for a shot on the video if you would like his info get ahold of me and I will give you his info.  Of by the way Roger Rothaar I believe started this hunt so maybe he or others will chime in.
Luck has nothing to do with it, just Boot leather and a GWP.

My best hunting buddy goes to Walter's every other year.  He loves it.  Roger did spend a lot of time up there in the beginning.

Just be careful you don't set yourself up for a major disappointment. True 350 lb bears are a lot rarer than many outfitters would have you believe. Many of the "300 lb" bears you seen in advertising pics would be hard put to break the 200 lb mark on a scale.

Also, just wanting to shoot one bear, and have it be 350 lbs is kinda like deciding you only want to shoot one whitetail in your life, but it has to score 170 typical. It's a pretty tall order to fill.

The only Bear hunt I did was in Maine, over bait.
Try Fred Eichler with   Full Draw Outfitters . I haven't hunted with Him, but he is a Tradgang Member and a Great Guy.

why not do it yourself.  as far as getting close goes if you can play the wind and stay out of sight you dont need a guide.  plus the cost would probably alow you two trips for the price of one.  that being said you would have to know some areas that would be accessable to a guy without a boat which their are many in alaska a guy could get to with a rental car,
pm me if you would like some ideas, im pretty shure i could direct you to some areas that would give you oportunities,  even some specific trails and mountians.
