Any arrows through elephant ribs?
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:57:00 PM »
G'day lads,

I'm just trying to find a little short and simple yes or no information to share with an inquiring rifleman. I'm not looking for a rightness/wrongness debate at all.

So here it is: Has anyone ever taken-out an elephant rib with an arrow to successfully kill that elephant with that arrow (regardless of bow type it came from)? Yes? No?

I often hear of buffalo ribs being busted through, but I'm wondering if this has ever happened with elephant.

I'm aware of the dead elephant rib test conducted by one well-known gent, and his belief that it cannot be done. I just want to ascertain whether this is the case in all instances, especially on live elephants. So, basically, if you've heard of an arrow either stopping dead on a rib or going through a rib, please let me know.

Thanks so much,

Ben

Ben iv heard of and seen footage of several elephants that have been taken with high poundage bows, even seen footage of an elephant killed with a 2 blade mechanical.
iv also seen some photos taken by a South African ph of a rib (dry rib) that they had shot showing different results depending on where the rib was hit.
It can be done but as with everything in hunting there are many variations in each situation.
There is more to the Hunt.. then the Horns

If I remember right, all the authors that took elephants did it with shots between ribs. I think everyone said that it can't be done. I'm talking about classic traditional bowhunters. On the compound field, Chuck Adams failed because he couldn't penetrate a rib on his elephant. But If I remember well, Dr. Adrian de Villiers did it, and it's explained in his book "Bowhunting in South Africa"

Thanks. Pucci, do you know where I might find a copy of this book?

Ben, I got my copy on this place:

 http://www.bowhunting.net/eMagazine/Articles/2004/04-AfricasBowhunter009.html

Very interesting book, though he only hunts with a compound. He likes very heavy bow (up to 150#!) and very heavy arrows.
