790grs flying at 165fps

i've had the opportunity to chrono my setup. 69#@28" with 790gr arrows.
the chrono told me that they are doing 165fps (dacron string) AT THE BOW.
i was shooting in someone's house so i wasn't able to get a reading at 15m (my max range at the moment).

so do you think this yields enough momentum for use on water buffulo? it works out to be 0.579 slug ft AT THE BOW.

arrow flight is great. 4x4" feathers helical, 23% FOC, 5/16 carbons. anyone got an idea what the arrow speed might be at 15m?

i'm going to add a footing to the arrows which will add about 6-12gr in weight plus i'm possibly going to switch to a D97 string.

opinions anyone?
would you make them heavier? if so, how much?

the D97 will prob give you a few extra fps it would be interesting to see just how much.

Rick M would be the fella to ask, i recon that would kill a buff with the right shot, what BH you thinking of using?

broadhead will either be the blackstump with a double bevel, (my favourite). i've also got some 160gr grizzlies to try.

i recently got some 190gr grizzlys that Ron from KME modified and sharpened.

Very impressive head when it is that sharp, im going to use them on Giraffe when i get back to south africa, but will field test them on a Scrub bull if i get a chance in September

Clint, heavy arrows retain their down-range velocity better than light arrows, and EFOC arrows correct faster, saving a bit of the arrow's energy usually expended in paradox correction. You'll lose NO MORE than 4 fps at 20 yards. At that amount of EFOC you can probably get great flight stabilization with a lot less feather. I'd try both 2.5" and 3" four fletch on those. The smaller feather will mean even less velocity loss at 20 yards. On similar weight EFOC arrows, with the 2.5" A&A 4-fletch I'm now using I lose only 2 fps at 20 yards.

Both very good BH choices. Your arrow setup sounds good to go; get'er done!

doctor ed- i have a new arrow setup that i think i will go with.

i've come up with a 900gr arrow at about 158fps at the bow. approx 25% foc.

i did some chrono work with my 69# bob lee recurve using several different arrow weights ranging from 800 to over 1000grs. i found with my setup that my momentum figures continued to rise with increasing arrow mass until 1000grs at which point momentum figures went backwards. 1000grs seems to be the point of diminishing returns for my bow.

I would switch to a d97 if I were you. At 70# you need 7 strands so an 8strand 2 bundle or 9 strand 3 bundle would be good. You should check out the thread "the perfect arrow". I would use 4 fletch 2.5 or 3in feathers with a turbulator and offset to match your single bevel broadhead. The answer to more penetration from this point is not going to be more weight but how you use it.
