Hog Sow Estrous
« on: January 09, 2010, 11:55:00 PM »
Has anybody used this stuff and had good success with it and where did you get it from?

Going Hog hunting for the first time in March and thought this might improve the chances a little bit...

Will be hunting in GA over feeders and was told that the big mature Boars will come down wind to check for Sows in heat and only come in if they smell a girl that's in...

Any help will be appreciated guys!!

Thanks,
Coty

Have never used it, but makes sence.....I would be careful about getting ANY on your person as I have seen large boars run OVER 4" around trees to get at sows in heat.....also saw two boars fight over a sow and it was scary !!!!!!

We got some from a veterinarian in South Africa.  There were some tame bush pigs in camp and I tried some on them but it had no effect.  Perhaps the pigs were too young to worry about such stuff yet or it was the wrong time of year.

Doesn't hurt to try these things if you have enough time.  If it was a short hunt and my only opportunity to hunt somehting I wouldn't mess around with it....It might mess things up.

Tried it too, no good. Best of luck to you.

I used a product called "Sow in Heat" and I had a big boar (My first and only big game trad kill) follow my trail to me.  I watched him approach pretty much on my exact trail starting at about 95 yards out.  I had poured it all over my boots more as a cover scent.  I've also used it and seen no pigs.
Have a nice day!

I would imagin it is a lot like buck lure.I have used the real cheap stuff an the real good stuff how ever its my opion that there is a window of time that this stuff works.for deer in my area its like 6-12 days that it works well.

Don't know if it works or not....but it wouldn't be like buck lure...cause hogs can come in heat at any time up to 3 times a year.....not just in November.

I'm interested in hearing about your experiences.

If it is like deer scent then I wouldn't use it that doesn't work. They say the estros smell leaves very quickly after it is passed through the body thus just leaving the urine smell. This quickly breaks down to amonia. It all smells the same. Scout, find trails and food sources, hunt them scent free you will be better off.LCH

Don't think I'd be pouring it on my boots for a cover scent.

I've used Sow in Heat succesfully before. IME, the trick is to get fresh stuff and keep human scent down in the area where it is. In an effort to do this I took a nutter arrow and wrapped the end in yarn. When I got to where I was sitting I dripped some SiH into the yarn and shot the arrow into the ambush area. That was there's no fresh human scent there.

That said, the biggest one I killed with it came in from directly down wind. He was obviously skeptical and smelled me but after about 30 minutes of him sticking his head out, getting spooked, throwing a FIT in the brush then sticking his head out again the little brain finally overruled the big brain and he came out to the clearing to check out the scent and got smacked.
