Aus Buff vs Scrub bull

Hi,

In the process of booking a hunt in Aus (Cape York) for scrub bulls and boars ... my question ... if I had to hunt buff I would use a total arrow weight of around 900 grain ... I do not know scrub bulls (originally from South Africa) and would appreciate some comments whether I can go lighter and what the recommended arrow weight would be?

The reason for my question is that I would like to use the same arrows for both boars and scrubs ... and the heavy "buff" arrow seems a bit of an overkill for the boars.

yeah mate pig arrows are fine for scrub bulls. they are nothing like a buff. thin skinned and lighter bones. you still want some punch though. what setup do you plan on using?

Thanks for the feedback mate ... I'm currently rigging a new bow (wheelie) and looking at around 550-600 grain total arrow weight (#70, 32") ... would like to use silver flames (150gr) as bh ... not sure yet which arrow ... emailed Alaska Bowhunting Suppliers ... not sure whether the spine's on their Alaskan shafts will do with the 150gr at the tip combined with my draw length at #70 (also looking at the CE Maxima Hunter 450 ... 9.7gr/inch and 0.298 spine) ... the same bow I want to use for Buff ... if my Buff hunt realises, then I will get the Alaskan Safari shafts with the 315gr Ashby head ...

mate , they are totally different animals . i have taken Scrub bulls with my " pig " tackle and wouldn't hesitate to again . 58# bows and 600gns arrows .
buff on the other hand are a different kettle of fish and i don't have the experience [ aside from my ol' 45/70 ] with them to comment re archery tackle , there are many threads here dealing with it though .

Agree with the above comments. Buff certainly much thicker hide than Srub. However with wheelies at 70# and arrows at 600+ grns coupled with razor sharp two blades bh (my bh was 220gns)should be sufficient for buff. Two buff that I have harvested both at 30 meters, first one almost pass thru only hung in by the last two inches of vane on the opposite shoulder. The second buff had the arrow burried to the fletches. Both buff travelled under 50 meters and expired. They were arrowed with the above set up.  IMO our NT boars are much tougher than scrub. should be a sweet setup..most times we get clients in under 30 yards for scrubbers,you are able to call them in,makes for some good fun...
