Got the itch...
« on: April 24, 2011, 02:33:00 PM »
I'm sure it's a bit early yet, but is there anything that can be done to prep and maintain a site for fall black bear? This year will be my first big game trad hunt and i'm anxious to get out in the woods.
Unfortunately where I'm located oaks are extremely rare, but I do have access to a wide variety of small plants and seeds.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
bryan.

I'm assuming you can't bait where you are?  Could you get some fruit trees established quickly?  A pile of anythihg edible will attract bears if you can bait.  Rotten meat, used deep fry oil, donuts, dog food, molasses mixed with oats etc.  give us a little more info and someone here will be able to help you out.

The biggest thing for me at the moment is figuring out if bears pattern similar to deer, and if a food plot of certain fruit species will get them moving through the area more consistently. I can't bait until mid August, but would have no problem getting plants established quickly. Raspberries are fairly common locally, and I have a feeling they wouldn't have to travel far to get their fill.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to just wait until I can bait, but it would be nice to know that they are at least in the area.
