external footer for Axis ST 300
« on: September 26, 2011, 12:22:00 AM »
I have only found one type of metal/carbon tubing that can sleeve an Axis ST 300. This shaft has ID of .204, OD of .275.

I found some 3/8" 321 stainless tubing at smallparts.com.  It is .277 ID and .375 OD.  This is  awfully thick, but happens to match the ferrule OD of the ABS Ashby BH that I intend to use on Cape Buffalo.  I'd gladly use some .020 wall if I could find it, as a 1" external footer will add 100 grains to the weight.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

According to Charlie Lambs post in the How To section, a 2016 will fit your Axis shafts.  Hopefully someone who's done the same as you're trying will pipe in, othewise I'd head to your local wheelie shop and see if they have any cutoffs you can try.

Thanks for the response.

I don't think a 2016 will fit.  That's a .3125 OD and a 2965 ID. So it'd be awfully loose.

Do you shim it somehow?

Thanks for helping relieve my ignorance.

I just found my error. The ID is the OD minus TWO wall thicknesses.  DOH!

2018 should be .2765 ID.Don't know if that's thick enough for you.

Online Metals has this size stainless,seamless tubing:0.3125" OD x 0.02" WALL x 0.2725" ID T-304/304L TUBE
That's cutting it very close on ID but maybe.

That would be identical in dimension to a 2020 aluminum shaft, only stainless.

A 2020 won't fit over the 300 Axis ST shafts. I bought 2018 and 2016 and the 2018 won't fit either.

So I put a section of 2.4"x2016, 1"x 2215, .25"x 2413. The 2413 is a press fit on the 2215, so I'm not sure if enough glue stays in to hold it.

This gives one layer of support .2" past the 3 rivers 100 grain brass insert, 2 layers past the threaded section of the insert and a full 3/8" diameter end section that matches the OD of the Alaska Bowhunting Suppply Ashby broadhead.

That's a tough looking setup.I bet that small piece will hold if the parts were clean.I don't think it takes much epoxy to hold.

Iv been thinking the same thing Don.

Ill be using the New Goldtip Kenetics 300 and they have an OD of .275

i was hoping the 2018 would work, they must be supper close, did you make sure there was no burr on the inside from where you cut it and try sand the outside of the Axis? you want to do that anyway to get the best bond with the Epoxy.

I would not recommend doing several footings over the top of the others, its more trouble then it is worth trust me, we'v played with that before.
You will be better with just One footing over the front.  Check again to see if you can get the 2018 to work it should be a very tight fit, and that is what you want.

If you have to go with a bigger piece you can shim it by using Masking Tape, you'l have to play with the length to get the desired thickness and you roll it very tightly over the shaft like rolling on an arrow wrap. Thats been the best way to shim and the epoxy holds well on the masking tape, but again its not ideal.

Go with a quality 48hours epoxy for you footing once you get it worked out, and lightly sand and clean all surfaces.

Another thing i do is when i find the footing that works i take the full length arrow and epoxy my footing over the front of the shaft before installing the HIT insert, Glue the footing over giving yourself 1/4" more then you want and then when it is set i take it to the arrow saw and cut off the extra 1/4" so that you are cutting through the footing and the carbon, this insures the front is perfectly flush, key to ensure your broadhead sits flush and aligns.
There is more to the Hunt.. then the Horns

I've never hunted buff before, but man, a triple footer seems to be overkill to me.  I've been using a single footing over my carbon shafts for years and had perhaps one or two failures in that time.  LOTS of rocks hit with those arrows!  Amazingly durable with just the single footing and the smaller diameter of a single footing vs. the multiple footings should increase penetration.

Must be nice to have a buff hunt to look forward to!
