Need help with drywall tape backing

So when you back a bow with drywall tape, do you use the fiberglass kind or the paper kind? I believe I’ve heard of both being used, so I assume both would work. How many layers do you put down? Is the paper kind waterproof after its been painted? How long lasting is it? I really need help with this because it won’t be long before I get to the backing stage of my bow. Thanks for your help,

I've used the fiberglass type with good results. Three layers. I try to over lap them so that the vertical lines lay next to each other and not on top of each other.
Just cover the back of your bow with wood glue and put a layer down. when it dries repeat two more times.
I'm sure the paper kind will work, but the fiberglass type is very strong. I don't really care for the looks of it, but it's hard to beat for a cheap but very effective backing.

Thanks a lot. Do you need to use three layers or will just one suffice just as well? I was reading a tutorial in which the guy only used one layer...

I used three because there are gaps in the tape. It's like screen. Some guys have used four but I think that's overkill. However, I don't think that one layer provides enough protection. A splinter could rise through the gaps.
Two may work well though if you're careful when applying it. After you apply the first layer, lay the second one down without glue and see how well you can cover the gaps in the first layer.

Thanks, it was my bad. I reread the tutorial and he did use three layers. I don't know why I missed that.
