Kodiak Special Info.
« on: November 08, 2004, 07:32:00 AM »
I was wondering if any of you folks could help me?
A fellow at work told me that he had an old Bear bow that he needed a string for so I asked him to bring it in to work and I would try to help him out. What he brought in was a 1950something Kodiak Special with a missing tip overlay. I informed him that he can not shoot the bow untill he got the tip fixed as the sharp edge of the nock would wear and cut the string. I told him that if he just wanted a bow to shoot I had an old 46# Bear Grizzly that I would trade him. He shot and liked the Grizzly, and the deal was done.

The bow is a Bear Glass Powered Kodiak Special.
It has Gray/Tan glass on the back and Brown glass on the face. The bow is right handed, with a leather grip. There was no coin, and no place for one. Under the grip is writen 64" XG793 48#

If anyone could give me a year/date on this bow I would be very gratefull.

Also I have contacted Don Ward about a professional Bow Doc refinish. I would like any opinions about this. I think this would be a fun bow to take to 3D shoots etc. Eventualy the bow will be left to my boys when I pass on.

Thanks for any help, Happy Hunting!!!   Chuck

the KS's from 55-58 had no coin and leather grips.55 and 56 had 2 tone swirl risers with aqua and dark brown glass.57 and 58 had tan/tan glass(2 tone swirl riser)1959 had grey and cream glass-some did not have coins, they had rosewood risers.I'm not sure where yours fits as far as glass color description! Is the riser a solid color?

The riser is 2tone but I don't think I would call it swirl. Looking at the top of the leather grip I can see 3 laminations of dark wood that run down through the riser. The inside of the sight window looks likea maple section where the strikeplate would go,the dark wood up the sight window to where the limb widens out where it changes to maple again. Are you totaly Confused Yet????? As for the glass, the face is definetly dark brown. The back of the bow looks gray to me, Maybe a 40yearold aqua????? Thanks for your help!!!
