rebuilding old bows?
« on: June 21, 2006, 07:39:00 AM »
What do y'all think? I've been seeing lots of old Ben Pearson's, bears for way cheap but most are in either in sad shape or low weight, 38#/45#s.

Do y'all think its possible to buy stuff like clear glass from Binghams, refinish the bows and use the clear glass to raise the weight 5# to 10#s?

Would it be safe? I've got lots of time and little money due to recent retirement so it would be like a kids playtime for me if it would work.

There is more to it than just glueing another layer of glass over existing glass. You would have to built a form that matches the bow. Then the bow needs to be heated to 160 deg to cure the epoxy, which could cause delamination of the existing glass, or do a slow cure for several days. Then you would have some very heavy mass weight limbs that would off set the draw poundage gain. You could sand off the existing glass, but I think it would be dificult to tell when you have gone past the glass and into the wood laminations. You could also just cut the limbs off and build new limbs on to the riser, but you may as well start from scratch.

Thanks Ron
nothings ever as simple as I think it is, oh well, I can still have fun refinishing and shooting them even if I cant add a few pounds.
