Arrow Bench build-along
« on: January 28, 2007, 03:17:00 PM »
I built the bench and some garage storage this summer when we moved in, and have been waiting for the "right time" to start arrow bench.  No time is the "right time" so I finally got started right after Christmas.  Now, if I can figure out this pics thing.

Picked this up on Ebay- you've seen 'em.  They all seem to run in the $20-30 range.

Got the saw mounted on a short piece of 2X6 at the end of the bench and marked out 27-31" on the bench.  Will probably just slide a 2X4 and an attached matching piece of plywood (to bring the shaft to level with the saw) into place when I'm cutting arrows, but since I won't be using it much, I don't plan on mounting this extra lumber to the bench as I did the saw.

Picked up these 3 little guys on Ebay for $12-13 (about $4-a-piece).  They mount well with 2 or 3 little screws.  I took off all of the gears on one and am just using the motor a D battery.

Had some left-over lumber from the bench and shelves, and put together this fletching machine.

This morning, picked up a piece of felt and Wal-mart and had to go to Home-Depot for the rubber surgical tubing (Plumbing department).  They only sold the surgical tubing in about 3' lengths, so I had to pay $14 for 3' of rubber tubing when I only needed 2 inches.  Guess I'll never run out.  Then, the little "axle" (don't know what else to call it) coming out of the motor had a pretty small gear on it, so I tore a thin piece of duct tape, wrapped about 3" worth to build it up, then turned half the surgical tubing inside out and rolled it over the tape (tight fit!).  For trial sake, I used an aluminum shaft I had left from several years ago and plugged the tip end into the opposite end of the surgical tubing, and let 'er rip.  Spins perfect and quiet with very little friction with the felt.

Next week, going to dip some old aluminum shafts and try this painting stuff out.

Don't know.  I just searched "hobby motors" on Ebay and they came up.  I think they are used in R/C vehicles and might be purchased at hobby stores with R/C vehicles.  A lot cheaper on ebay, probably.
