WING PRESENTATION.....THE OUTLAW?
« on: October 14, 2007, 09:33:00 PM »
I have a wing presentation that I heard someone refer to as the outlaw. What can you tell me about it. 66" 50#. I put some camo skin on the white glass and hunting with it this year.

Could be a 61 Presentation. (a pic would help)Looking at the sight window from the front (shooters view), you will see a series of laminations that fadeout as they progress toward the top of the window. The fadeouts form a series of horizontal lines as it progresses to the top limb.

I’m not positive about the facts here but as the story goes, a competitor, possibly  a gentleman by the name of  Fred Simmons, won a National Instinctive championship with it and was challenged. The challenge was that the series of horizontal lines acted as sight references and that he wasn’t really shooting instinctively. Hence, the term 'Outlaw'.

I do not know the outcome but in ’62, they covered the front of the sight window with a decorative overlay instead of the laminations.

Interesting bit of information.  That is a piece of trivia that I had never heard before.  I know the same type of situation occurs on the Pearson Palomino.

Do you remember if this was a NFAA or NAA Chapionship?

Papalapin;
I think it was 1960 National Field Instinctive Championship. Another guy shot with him by the name of "Skip" Palmer who came in 3rd. Skip was also using a Presentation.

If someone out there knows different, chime in please.

Don (Sheppard);
I collect Wings and am friends with the Lee family (wonderful people by the way)and have other contacts that worked at Wing. I have tried and found it impossible to correlate S/Ns with year. (No records were kept that I can find)Generally, you can tell the model and sometimes the era (Houston Wing, Jacksonville Wing, Head Ski and AMF)from it, but there is no data that I know of which track the actual number that follows the alpha designator chronologically like Bear. Even with Bears, even a knowledgable collector gets lost in the inconsistancies some times.

Also, catalog continuity has some gaps. e.g., I can't find many catalogs prior to 60 (I have 1 undated catalog and a couple of flyers and some magazine ads), and also '68 or '69 (one or both of them are contained in Catalog/X) and I can't find the other, 71, and some of the Slim Line catalogs. So if anyone has one of these, I'd like to exchange info on them.

There are no stickers or silk screens on the Wing except the one that says Presentation by Wing, Houston,Texas on the limb below the riser. Were there any others on the bow originally?

Hotfoot in your first post you said it may be a 61 Presentation.... "Is that your final answer"

That's it, but it should have a Houston Texas address below the wing logo on the sticker. Also some writing below the handle on the left side that gives you the specs. The form is;
   66" X 159
   45# @ 28"

No - My exact words were "Could be a '61 Presentation". My final answer is that your bow IS a '61 Presentation.

With regards to the '61 Presentation = Outlaw, ov course I'm not 100% sure. I also said "If someone out there knows different, chime in please."

Don;
Can't see super details but looks like your Presentations are in very nice shape.

They made this Presentation in '63 & '64. Came in 2 standard lengths; '66" & '69". They retailed for $100. $115 if you wanted a thumb rest.

Main difference between '61/'62 and '63/'64 is the integral stabilizers added to the back of the handle they called "Forward Mass" riser section. Otherwise the risers are pretty similar to the earlier model.

In '65 they introduced the Presentation II.

Oh ..... one other add on the '63/'64 Presentations, Wing moderated that radical deep and swooping 'curve found on the limbs of the earlier '61 and to a lesser degree the '62, but still used the multi stress construction method similar to what I understand Groves still uses today. (I think it means laying up the limbs in 2 stages by pre-stressing the limb laminations in one direction on the first layup (glue & cure) then changing the limb curvature for the glu-up of the final laminations).

I don't know who "invented" the technology, Groves, Wing or other.

A pic comparing the limbs of the two wings,they definitely eased the amount of curve in the limbs between a "61" and a "63 or 64". Of course one is a 66" and one is a 69" but the change is obvious. Thanks for the input and info.
