Riser wood?
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:55:00 AM »
One for the experts, (not me)

1973 Herters takedown. Doesn't look like the Brazilian Rosewood on some of the older Herters bows. Any idea what wood it is?

Pending on the grain,Brazilian has many different apperances.Another thought is back in 1973 the bow finishes used had no UV blocker.Which causes the Brazilian to get a light color, caused more from the finish yellowing. But I would say there were really only 2 woods used by Herters in 1973 on your model,Brazilian and Hondurin rosewood..But I bet yours is just light colored Brazilian rosewood.....bowdoc

Could it be Goncalo Alves? I heard somewhere that Herters used it in some of their bows??

Interesting question. I have a herters as well with similar wood. In fact, I bought it at the Baltimore shoot and Rich you said it was rosewood. I don't think it is rosewood as the brazilian rosewood I am familiar with is redder and darker. And it doesn't look like bubinga, it is different grained.

bowdoc says it might be honduran Rosewood. I am not familiar with that wood.

Are any of the people that built these bows still around? Maybe they could enlighten us?
