mounted my first point
« on: December 01, 2007, 11:27:00 PM »
i got my hands on a few cedars and tried to mount my first point.  i bought some martin 125 grain field tips.  I used the pencil sharpener thing to taper the end of the shaft; however, the field tip didn't want to go all the way up the taper.  i got it glued on, but there is a gap between the laquer and the start of the tip.  did i miss a step somewhere?  the points are 11/32 and the arrow is 11/32...thanks!

I have had a couple different whiffen,PS type taper tools, that were not proper, and didnt make a good taper. One cut the taper too long,as you describe, and the other, cut it too short. On the longer one,i had to cut a bit of the tip off and it worked.
Target archery is seeing how far away you can get and still hit the bull's eye. Bowhunting is seeing how close you can get and never miss your mark.

My opinion only: When it comes to tapering, spend the money and get a good tapering tool.  May I recommend the Tru-Center tapering tool.

I always cut bout 1/8" off the tip of the arra, they seem to bottom out in some points. Heat er back up ,take the point off and cut the tip off the arra! Have fun and good shootin!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I have a tru-temper. It would be my last choice to use. I use the pencil sharper type and like kennym, cut off the bottom 1/8 inch and they work fine.

Kennym has it right and do not waste your money on a TRU tapering tool, BEST archery makes a decent one but the pencil sharpener type work pretty good as well. Shawn
