old mag vs. new mag
« on: May 18, 2008, 09:48:00 PM »
hey guys,
i have a 50# bear kodiak mag(grayling made) and i use it mainly for bowfishing and backyard shootin, and i love it,especially w/ my 26" draw. the only thing is it has alot of stress lines and one crack at the fadeout that i filled with super glue. i know these issues might not be harmful but i want a newer KM...because lets face it..i'm only 25 and i am wanting a bow like this to pass down to my son one day and i dont know if this grayling bow would hold up forever. obviously these bows are well made to be capable of holding up as long as they do...but what is the general opinion about these bows?? i know alot of people would just say find another short bow but man i really like these bears:)

thanks and opinions are welcomed

hey brandon, i think the kodiak mags are one of the best 52" bows on the market. and the price is reasonable too. i haven't shot any of the new ones so can't give an opinion there. the grips and finish on the grayling models are second to none. with a little care your older kmag should last long enough for your grandkids.scotty

thats one thing that really got my attention about this bow...first let me say that i usually hunt with what some call hi-tech recurves, like the 2 hoyt gamemasters i own. so i am use to a couple of things 1. the metal bows are camoed so they dont show scratches as bad 2. they dont require alot of maintenance, finish wise. 3. they're takedown......all that being said, all i can say is that this k-mag i have now has such character, beauty, and warmth not found in my die hard hunting bows....the only thing i am afraid of is this one coming apart on me...since it already has a sizeable crack in the glass and the stress lines. i do want this one to last though. i just thought a newer one would have better glass and newer materials for longevity?

You can always buy a used Grayling mag for 100 to 150 bucks.

Horney Toad hit the nail on the head. Many nice Grayling kodi mags on egay. The newer ones are fast flight ready, but for me there is nothing like a Grayling Bear. Here is a thread of mine with a 125.00 future wood (1977 or 78) Kodiak magnum, 50# peebay special.

Personal choice!

KM's 1964-69.

The older KM's are more of a collectors item, in my opinion.  If passing along a shottable bow is your main concern, I would rather pass on the older KM's than a new one,.

Hopefully, if you buy a new one, by the tu=ime it comes to pass it on in your estate, it wil lbe an old one; but an old one now will be even older then.

IT WILL HOLD UP...  just take care of it.

I think the 64 and 65 Kmags are the best looking of all the Kmags.  Some Rosewood 62s are real lookers also.
