Blackhawk and Herters info needed
« on: August 11, 2008, 11:17:00 AM »
My fleamarket finds.
One is a lefty Herters Perfection #50 52inch and the other is a little righty Black Hawk Wasp #40
they were totaly wrapped in camo tap and limb covers so they are sticky ! Could somebody bring me up to speed on these manufacturers ? Are these bows from the 60's-70's. I am going to make new strings ,clean 'em up and then pass them on to a new adult shooter and a kid who needs a heaver bow. ps only $25 with a pile of old 2018 arrows.
I really don't know anything about these makers so any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Cravotta Brothers of E. McKeesport, Pennsylvania sold a pretty good middle-of-the-road line (Black Hawk) of bows, quivers, and other archery items in the 50's, 60's, and even into the 70's.  I've heard that one common flaw to watch out for is the lifting of the fiberglass, but I've never experienced that personally.  Otherwise, they shoot pretty good and used prices for them are relatively low.  In other words, not a bad bow for their prices.

Someone told me these bows were easy to date since over 95% were marked with the month and year of production in the first 3 numbers of the serial.  So if your bow's serial # starts with a "763", then it was made in July, 1963.

I'm sure others will chime in with more info as well as help on your Herter bow too.

The serial number on the Herters tells all (usually) what is it?

The Herters is 520471021 and the Blackhawk is 769.
They look like brand spanking new! They must have been wrapped up the day they were bought. The decal on the Herters looks brand new all shiney. It's nice because I just gave away my backup bow (LH Bear Grizzly #56) to a young man who wants to shoot and needed a bow and the Herters can fill the gap for a new backup to give to another young guy! Actually it's a pretty nice feeling to be able to pass on some nice archery equipment to a person starting out instead of having it just setting up on my rack.

Hi Bible5

Looks like the Herters is a 52" (50" amo) built in April 1971. Should be the 21st of that model built in April that year.

One heck of a deal getting those two bows for $25 and a very nice and thoughtful gift for a new archer  :)

You know I got started by a traditional archery guy giving me a bow and some matching arrows and some weekly lessons and encouragment.  So it's nice to repeat the process
