If your looking for a bow made in 1946, then you are going to have a tough rode to hoe. Here are the names of several bowyers from the forties who made wonderful bows but finding one with a manufacturer date of 1946 will be difficult as most bowyers didn't date their bows. I collect the old stick bows made by known bowyers prior to the advent of fiberglass. Here is a list of bowyers from the 20's through the 40's.

OK Chuck, so what else you wanna know.

Good post IKE.  Lots of good info there.

'Specially thsi one.

1947 Paul Janssen 1903 Short Street New Orleans Louisana

I knew Paul personally, although I never knew him to make bow.  we bought all of our equipment from him in New Orleans.  We would drive 60 miles from Houma, LA on a Sunday morning, eat at Royal Castle, and wait until 1:00 PM when he opened.

I know Jack Howard started making bows in 1947.  Ms Dorothy told me that she knew that year for a fact because he made the first one the year they got married.

You gott love this forum.  Ask a simple question and someone pops up with more info than you ever expected.

Good one IKE >>>----->

Dave  That still might work.

1946 is what Chuck admits to.  Now I was born in '46 and I know Chuck is a lot older lookin' than me.

Hey Jack, since when does "better lookin" translate to 'older lookin'? LOL.

Wow David, that is a lot of good info. Thank you so much for posting. I rember seeing a 1946 Berry longbow in a high dollar collection being sold on the auction site 2 or 3 years ago. Seems like it went for around 800.00 or more.
I doubt I'll find one that I could afford, but I'll keep on looking.

Dave, what kinda 39 Pearson have you got?
i've got an old Pearson (oak I think) static tip recurve, but I have no idea how old it is.

Thanks to all for the help.

It was tough enough for me to find a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 made in 1947.

Yes, great listing IKE...and thanks.

How bout for a youngster like me ... 1949. Are we into Grumleys for Bear yet? Other suggestions for a classic from 49. Something I can shoot, not just look at. I have a flyrod from birth year but not a bow.

Shaun, if you find more than one '49, let me know. I actually LOOK at least 3 years younger than Jack so I could get by with a 59 year old bow.

'46 would be tough enough but I'd need a '44.  I do have some rifles made in my birth year but then again, there was a war going on and they were plentiful.

Greetings, Trad Gang. I stumbled onto your forum while searching for info on a few old bows I recently "re-discovered" in our storage room. These, and a couple vintage tackle boxes are all that remains of my late grandfather's gear. His name was Wayne Thompson - 1946 U.S. National Target Champion.

I have 5 all-wood "stick"? longbows with what appear to be antler tips, and rudimentary suede grips. 1 is marked "Styles 1935", one simply "Styles". The other three are unmarked. But, they're all similar and appear to be from the same bowyer. And, from reading this thread, I gather this would be Cassius Hayward Styles. He was from the SF Bay Area, as was Grandpa Wayne. So, that makes sense. FYI, I grew up in the Bay Area as well, and only relocated to Munich in 2012.

Anyway, I just recently decided to take up shooting again after a nearly 35-year hiatus. I'll be picking up a new custom-built long bow next WED from Berlin bowyer (and ex-Canuck) William Reeve. And, I wanted to see if you folks could tell me anything about these old Styles bows before I shlepp them up to Berlin for Herr Reeve to check out.

Any tidbits would be appreciated. I can post a few photos if anyone is interested. I just need to snap a few, and figure out how to upload them.

Thanks, in advance. This forum appears to be one heck of a resource. Looking forward to exploring further in the time to come.

Cheers,
Scott

Styles learned to make bows from Saxton Pope. When he got back from WWI he had trouble adjusting and spent a year living in the north california wilderness.

Great list Ike by the way! You might add Indian Archery and Toy (1922)
