Did you know..........
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:07:00 PM »
That Fred Bear was in Vietnam?

Well at least his bows were.  I found a combat photo book of Vietnam, and in it was a picture of a Patrol Boat member launching a flaming arrow with a Bear recurve.  Looks to be maybe an Alaskan, or Polar; can't right tell from the picture but you can make out the white belly glass and the Bear screen print on the bottom limb.  Hope to have a scan of it this evening.

The use of the bow during modern times for combat use has always been an interest of mine. However, it will probably take someone like Cliff Huntington to do the research so we can have the facts.

In our early history, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin favored the bow for use in the Revolutionary War, believing they were superior to the firearms available.  This idea was laid to rest when it was determined that the manufacture of the bows and arrows was not practical. (Fred Bear and Ben Pearson would not come along for another 150 years.)

There are reports of combat bow use in WWII, but I cannot find the details.

When the Viet Nam war came along in the 60's, Larry Hatfied states that a couple hundred short recurves (Mamba and Hi-Speed) were ordered by the military for their use.  Actual use of the bows as combat weapons by our soldiers cannot be verified (at least by me).

There are also reports of Black Widow bows being sent to Southeast Asia.

The bows were most likely used as gifts or trade bait to some tribes or may have been used by our soldiers for recreation. Others say some short takedown bows were used as survival gear for our pilots who happened to be shot down.

We all know that bows and related equipment have been sent to Iraq, but not for combat use.

I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Here ya go gents.

According to the caption, the river boats would use flaming arrows to burn down bamboo huts along the river banks if they concealed VietCong bunkers.  It also states that the bow was standard equipment on that specific boat for just that purpose.
Picture was taken by Photographer Nick Mills.

that photo was on the cover of a archery magazine--and i have a copy of it -i'll dig it up over the weekend--great article--if i recall-correctly they stated that the rifle-launched grenades tended to pass right through the grass huts!!but when they shot a flaming arrow into a hut --the hostiles came out pretty quickly!!

Good pic Tim. Special Forces used bows in a limited capacity and the "Archer's Bible" shows a paratrooper with a a Takedown. I have to be honest though- bows against firearms is an inequitable scenario. Has nothing to do with our sport.

Actually excludeing the pic Tim showed(showed is that a word?)99% of archery used by modern day army men was for food like fish and small game and really played very little roll in warfare.bowdoc

Definitely weird by todays standards to wear PJ's but back in his day it was probably the norm.

Now if they were striped footy PJ's, then that would be weird.    :biglaugh:
