three pumps and a quiver...
« on: January 10, 2009, 12:00:00 PM »
I have been messing around with a quiver for a 1957 Kodiak and I thought I would share my creation. Originally I made this other quiver for a '59 Kodiak by cutting off the lower arm of a spring arm quiver and adding the attachment plate from a bolt on quiver.  I also replaced the rubber grips and foam insert with parts from 3Rivers. This is how it turned out.

Now I was left with a bolt on quiver with no attachment plate and a sawed off lower spring arm.
Plus I had a right handed lower attachment plate from a tape on quiver that had come in an old archery box I bought. A little silver solder and a velcro strap off a shooting glove and this is what I came up with. It is very stable while shooting, no screw to drop to the ground when you take it off and it does not require a hole in the bow for a bushing. The lower spring arm had to be re-contoured prior to soldering it on, a couple bends have to be reversed. Plus it takes a little time "tweeking the attachment plate so that the quiver is square and positioned correctly.  I also replaced the foam and rubber grippers on this one as well. It is an awesome quiver.

I did glue a piece of 4-6 oz russet to the belly of the lower attachment plate to cover the speedy rivet base used to attach the strap and it adds a little more padding so the bow finish is not scratched.

Thanks John, this discussion of compass vs quiver bushing in your maple site window thread encouraged me to show you this quiver.

I'm glad you did.I hate to alter original Bear items such as the bow I have or even the quiver like you have, but if we're going to use these items,it only makes sense to customize them to our specific needs or wants. Not all of them mind you,but some like your quiver and possibly my Kodiak.I've seen Fred's personal hunting bows in the museum and most all of them have the compass imbedded in the riser. If it's good enough for Fred it should be more than good enough for me.Help keep me from getting lost.Nice job again on that quiver.

for the record, my white-glass '57 Kodiak is 60", 50# and has obviously been refinished. It does have the deep string-grooves cut into it but now that it has been "Bowdoctored" the bow is good to go. I had just grabbed some misc arrows for the pics, I am not shooting  those bodkin heads..   :D

Thanks Doc, you prolly remember this white glass Kodiak when it was a patient in your Seattle clinic. Your work and mine combined to make a pretty nice little package. I would be out hunting snow-bunnies with it today but the dude I was going with called last night and said it was -36 at his house... enough said.

as far as the title of this thread, it is something my Dad always called me when I was little, not sure what it means....

Here are some of the quivers I have around the house, I really like the older scab-board quivers and the black leather-top quivers. The one tape-on has never been used.

I like them also, they just fit well.

and I like to modify them as well

sweet display Trap, now you have me thinking... and that can always be a trip. How did you lengthen the brackets? Where did you get the clips and the spring arm in the last pic?

That's exactly right Doc.  I bought one on the bay that had a crushed hood so I cut the arms just below the hood.  I took the bottom bracket off of a good one and cut the wire in dead center and straightend them out.  The two are held together with GN rubber tubes.  I call it the "Great Northern Bear"  The added length really helps keep the arrows from flopping around and making noise.

The Spring arm in the last pic came from an 8 arrow quiver that I got from Tim Zeigler.  The clips were there.  The wire just needed to be tweaked a little.  I stripped the green rubber coating.  Painted the whole thing brown and then dipped the bow contact end in rubber dip coat.
