Refinish Question

I recently picked up a Browning Nomad Stalker I pretty cheap since it was in fairly rough condition.  I thought I would try my hand at refinishing it since I don't have much wrapped up in it and it's not a collector bow.  I've got all of the old finish sanded off the limbs and handle and I'm ready to finish it.  I was planning to use Tru-Oil.  Maybe a stupid question, but should I stain the wood before applying the Tru-Oil or just use the Tru-Oil only.

I don't think it really matters. If you want the wood to be darker you would stain it. I'm not sure if tru oil would be a good finish for the fiberglass limbs. Some of the experts will weigh in shortly.

Thanks, Jeff.  I thought I read in other posts that Tru-Oil was the product of choice for wood & fiberglass.  I guess I'll wait to see what others say.

Tru oil will work. I have used it on glass bows. Most of the guys who do a lot of this use a two part varnish and spray it on.

Tru Oil is a nice finish and easy to apply. Rub it, wipe it, sponge it on, lots of ways to apply it.  

It's not as durable as the finishes applied by the pros but works well for the hobbyist refinnisher like me.  

Alot of very thin coats are better than thick ones.  

I wouldnt stain the bow unless you just want it darker for some reason.  

There are quite a few threads in this forum about the use of tru oil.  A little research will give you lots of great tips for it's application.

Tru oil is about the easiest product to use and works great.Its just a little thin and when app.correctly you will need to app.it every 24 hrs for up to 8-10 coats.I would use a scotch-bite pad between coats to smooth up any defects.Tru oil also comes in a spray can and if you use that type you will need to app the same amount of coats and keep them as thin as possible.bd
