Best feeder???

Just wondering what your thoughts were on the best feeder available. I want something that is free standing and tall enough to keep deer from reaching the feeder unit. A timer that can be set for time and duration. I also need a varmit guard to keep the squirrels out. I looked at Cabelas 4 leg job with a built in ladder for filling but not very tall and no guard. Any suggestions? Steve

I've got two moultrie's that were sold at Sams Club for $100.00.  They work well, multi time timer and broadcast setting.  They have 30 gallon black plastic drums with three section legs but no varmit guard. The only problem I have is a bear has busted them up pretty good and both are in need of repair for the second time each.

Lots of landowners in SC use Lyman Feeders out of TX, from what I have seen.

They are big, sturdy legged, hogs can't harm them much, and they have nice controls with a test button and multiple start timer features.

Not cheap, but dependable and a good investment from what I have seen.

Here in the areas I hunt all of the adjacent ground has been leased up by outfitters. They have installed dozens of feeders and several food plots on the 14000 acres they have leased. There has been a significant drop in the quantity of deer on the land I am able to hunt. I've seen a total of 6 does in the last month whereas last year I would see 6 in the first hour every day.

I was talking with the landowner this past week and we have decided in order to keep the deer using his property we are going to put in approximately 6 new feeders and at least a couple of food plots and mineral licks. This is an area where 140-180" deer are seen and taken every year so it seems to me that the initial and added costs of keeping the feeders full and food plots in good shape will be worth the expense. I'll be watching this post for good information about feeders.

The best "feeder" I've found is a friend or your kid to haul in the feed and spread it around your hunting spot for ya.

if interested,get your own drums,use pulleys and cables to raise and lower to fill and also to keep the critters out,you can order your timers and droppers from cabela's(american brand dial types)for around 35.00 a pieace.it'll take about 6 or 7 years of supplimenting your herd to grow'em to boone and crockett size,try not to hunt over them for at least the first couple years,its costly and can be heartbreaking when done on someone else's property!habitat and cover is the key.
