Dang it!!
« on: February 17, 2009, 09:32:00 PM »
I'm heading out to NY for the annual JLMBH and was checking out a few old Bears I was taking along.

I strung up my beloved '59 Grizzly, pulled her back and heard the dreaded "pop"!!  After taking the string off I see the original upper overlay and a little of the glass under it is crushed.  Damn it, time to replace both of 'em!!

I strung my backup bow, the '59 KSpecial.  I've shot this thing once since Rich refinished her for me.  Pulled her back - POP!!  The base of the upper tip overlay lifted off the glass.  I think I can just use some CA glue to keep it down for the weekend, but time to replace those as well.

That leaves a cherry '59 Kodiak and '59 Polar... neither of which are getting carried through the thick multiflora rose this weekend.  That S*** is so thick I normally have to throw my bow out just so I can bust the brush to get out.

It shouldn't be a problem fixing the Grizz.  If the glass is crushed badly I'll just put a layer of glass over top of it instead of the paper phenolic.  Hopefully the CA fix of the KSpecial will hold for the weekend.  I don't have arrows ready for any of my other bows that are ready hunt.

Just venting.  Pissed me right off to have both of 'em go on the same night so close to a hunt.

I dug out my son's construction paper late last night and will be laminating some overlay material tonight.  I might need two small pieces of white glass for the Grizz though... any one have some extra I can buy?

Hey Jeremy the original tip overlays are comeing off my own 1959 Grizzly right now as well.My 59 was used almost if not all of its shooting life with an endless loop string. The serving on the endless loop is like a file and almost sawed through my paper tip overlays. Thanks for reminding me bd

Thanks for the offer Jamie.  I have plenty of bows to bring along, just not many arrows for the other ones.  I may have to take the tips off tomorrow and add some lead shot to bring 'em in tune... or just deal with Shawn telling me I need to tune my arrows!  :)

It looks like the '59 KS should be fine for the weekend       The '57 KS and '57 Kodiak will be along as my backups as will the '80 (?) TD.  The backups all need a slightly weaker arrow, but they'll be close enough.

I have the paper micarta (phenolic, whatever) curing now for the Grizz.

Thanks Kurt!

I took the stack for the Grizz out of the clamps this morning and gave 'em a little bend to fit the limbs better.  They should be fully cured tonight, but they should have been a little harder this morning... we'll see.

The glass on the Grizz isn't bad at all.  The tapered edge is all that was damaged.  I'll fill that with some epoxy mixed with glass filler and it should be good as new.
