1959 Kodiak - Take Down

I have a couple of old 1959 Kodiaks that I want to make into Take Downs.  Was thinking a mechanism like the Groves might work out.  Was wondering if anyone has tried a Groves style T/D on a 1959 Kodiak, or if anyone is making a Groves style T/D mechanism, or has access to some of them. Want to check around before starting from scratch to try to re-create them.

Would guess the smaller 1959 Kodiak Riser will require a T/D with pins closer together than this original Groves Spitfire Target…

Any ideas, suggestions, or comments welcomed…

Wade, I have been making T/D bows for 19 yrs and the groves T/d is no different than a 3 piece except it is only done on one half of the bow.
 Making a T/D from a bow that is allready shaped and finished is not easy but can be done if you go at it in the right way.
  don,t know about the '59 kodiak,as i have never handled or shot one .

When you cut it I think the saw kerf will take some wood out of it and require a small spacer to make up the difference like the Groves above.  Otherwise it will not match up neatly.

I would be concerned about the small size of the riser on a 59 for this type system. My first choice would be to use the fiberglass handle system now employed by Black Widow and others.

This is basically like the old metal sleeve system but with fiberglass and no interior sleeve. First the wood handle is cut down about 3/16 and cut at a 45. One side is coated with a release agent. The fiberglass and cloth is built up and shaped down to the original handle size. This system looks solid to me and is invisible after the handle is recovered. I have not heard negative feedback about it yet.

I am planning to try this system (not on a $500-1500 59 K at first) to see how I like it and how it works on a retrofit. Will keep you posted when I do it.

Bow bolt is an excellent system. Not sure how Mr Warren got a patent since the exact same system is on my 1940's era Model 12 Winchester shotgun, but he managed. Maybe it is the application to bows that made it unique. The unit price of about $100 is very reasonable considering he is certainly still working on recouping R&D and other costs. Connection hinge and other systems cost about the same (much cruder steel/brass sleeves cost about $40). The only down side is the leather cut line in mid handle, not much of a drawback compared to the lump from most hinge systems.

John Kabisa has a 1963 Kodiak that has the 'groves style' takedown mechanism. Granted the riser has a bit more room; and you would be scaling it down; sounds like a fun project keep us posted.
