Cody - I think you should call John and ask him about the bow if you want to know more about it...

I took one of the pics and 'sharpened' it quite a bit-enough to make the black glass on the back stand out from that dark background. Posting it here would be a waste of time; by the time it makes the trip and downsizing etc the effect would not be noticeable..I am satisfied it has a glass back.  :saywhat:

Cody:
I'm convinced its for real, its almost identical to a bow of a friend of mine, thats dated 1938.
Bjorn:
I doubt the backing is glass, the bow is too early for glass. it could be plastic, baleen, or fiber. Unless the owner had glass applied at a later date. Who knows, the more Hill bows I see the less I know about them. You here one thing that should narrow a few examples down to a bowyer then you see another that blows that idea down the tubes.
I took pictures of one today that did just that.

I am encouraged by your assessment Bob-nice to know there is a good chance that the bow is real.
There is 'black something' as a backing-I don't think it is owner added; so I'll go with your suggestions of what that might be. What is the backing on your friend's bow.
